RedHawks win over Goldeyes
August 20, 2010 - Northern League (NL)
Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release
FARGO, N.D. -- It's been quite an interesting week for the Winnipeg Goldeyes.
On Wednesday night they were held to just four hits in a 5-1 loss at Kansas City. On Thursday, they pounded out 14 hits in a 12-7 win over the Northern League's first-place Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks.
Then, on Friday night, they battled back twice to tie the RedHawks at 2-2 and then 4-4, but Fargo rallied for a run in the bottom of the ninth, as Winnipeg lost a heartbreaker 5-4 in front of a standing-room only crowd of 4,886 at Newman Outdoor Field.
Friday night's loss was particularly frustrating for Goldeyes manager Rick Forney. The Goldeyes could muster only six hits on the night, but fortunately one of them was a two-run homer in the top of the ninth off the bat of Dee Brown that tied the game 4-4. Without more consistency at the plate, the Goldeyes won't reach the post-season.
"That Fargo bullpen was worn out and we allowed (starter Scott) Fogelson to have easy 10-pitch innings in the first three innings of the game," Forney said. "The inconsistency at the plate is really hurting us. You have to score runs in this league if you expect to win ball games. Ace Walker pitched well enough to win that game. He gave up four runs in six innings. That should have been good enough to win.
"But we aren't getting any consistency from one-through-nine in the order. That makes it difficult to win most nights."
With the loss, the Goldeyes fell to 41-42 (22-20 on the road) on the season, fifth in the Northern League.
Fargo opened the scoring in the first on an RBI double from Jesse Hoorelbeke and then made it 2-0 in the second thanks to an RBI double off the bat of Kole Zimmerman.
Winnipeg tied it in the fourth as West tripled and then scored on a passed ball and then Diaz hit his 20th home run of the year, a solo blast off starter Scott Fogelson.
Fargo went ahead 3-2 in the fifth on a solo homer by Eric Campbell and then took a 4-2 lead when Carlo Cota singled, went to second on a ground ball and scored on a single by Zach Penprase.
The Goldeyes tied it in the top of the ninth as Harrison hit an opposite field ground rule double and Dee Brown blasted a monstrous two-run homer over the scoreboard in left.
Then, in the ninth, Zach Penprase walked, stole second and third and scored on a single by Mike Coles (who had gone zero-for-four) against a drawn-in infield.
Casey Hoorlebeke (9-5, 2.05 ERA), despite blowing the save in the ninth, earned the victory, while newcomer Sean Gregory (0-1, 13.50 ERA) took the loss for Winnipeg.
Winnipeg and Fargo play Game 3 of this important four-game series in Fargo on Saturday night. Anthony Bello (3-6, 4.92 ERA) will start for Winnipeg, while Matt Mossey (7-3, 3.87 ERA) will take the ball for Fargo. Game time on 1290 CFRW is 6 p.m.
