Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks News Release
FARGO, ND - Zach Penprase stole two bases and set up Mike Coles' game-winning walkoff single in the bottom of the ninth inning to push the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks past the Winnipeg Goldeyes 5-4 on Friday night in front of a sellout crowd at Newman Outdoor Field.
Fargo-Moorhead (48-33) received a strong effort from starting pitcher Scott Fogelson. The lefty tossed seven innings, allowing two runs on just four hits. Fogelson also struck out three and walked three in the outing.
The RedHawks started the scoring with two outs in the bottom of the first inning. Third baseman Eric Campbell singled and later scored on Jesse Hoorelbeke's double to the left-center field gap.
Fargo-Moorhead struck again in the second. In a near repeat of the run scored in the first inning, Carlo Cota singled and scored on a double to left-center field off the bat of catcher Kole Zimmerman.
The Goldeyes (41-42) answered in the top half of the fourth. Second baseman Kevin West tripled to the deepest part of the ballpark. Juan Diaz then followed with his 20th home run of the season, a monster shot that cleared the scoreboard in left field, to tie the game 2-2.
With one out in the fifth inning, RedHawks third baseman Eric Campbell answered Diaz's blast with a home run of his own to deep center field and stake Fargo-Moorhead to a 3-2 lead. The âHawks added another run in the sixth on an RBI-single by Zach Penprase to push the lead to 4-2.
Down two runs in the top of the ninth and facing Northern League ERA-leader Casey Hoorelbeke, Winnipeg's Dee Brown hit a two-run homer to tie the game 4-4. Coles then followed with his heroics in the home half of the ninth.
Campbell, Hoorelbeke, Cota and Zimmerman each went 2-for-4 at the plate in the game for Fargo-Moorhead. Campbell and Cota both scored a pair of runs for the RedHawks.
Diaz had a 2-for-3 night for Winnipeg
Casey Hoorelbeke (9-5) picked up the win in relief for Fargo-Moorhead. Sean Gregory (0-1) was saddled with the loss for the Goldeyes.
The two teams will continue their four-game series tomorrow night at Newman Outdoor Field starting at 6:00pm. Winnipeg's Antony Bello (3-6, 4.92) is scheduled to meet Fargo-Moorhead's Matt Mossey (7-3, 3.87).
