Rockford RiverHawks News Release
GARY, Ind. - Brad Halsey and the Gary bullpen four-hit Rockford as the RailCats beat the RiverHawks, 5-2, at U.S. Steel Yard.
The RiverHawks, who have lost seven of nine, were held to four hits for the third game in a row.
Rockford took a 2-0 lead on Jake Eigsti's RBI groundout in the second inning and his leadoff home run in the fifth.
Gary rallied on Louis Ott's leadoff homer in the bottom of the fifth and Cristian Guerrero's RBI single in the sixth inning. Mike Massaro knocked out Rockford starter Kyle Wright with a one-out go-ahead RBI single in the seventh inning. John Parham added a two-out, two-run double in the eighth.
Halsey (6-6) held the RiverHawks to three hits over seven innings for the win. He struck out five and walked two. Andy Shipman walked Rich Austin and gave up a ground-rule double to start the ninth inning, but earned his league-leading 19th save. He struck out two, including Jono Brooks on a curveball on the outside corner to end the game.
Wright (7-3) lost for the first time since June 18, when the RailCats beat him in relief. Wright had won five straight decisions. He had been unbeaten in his previous 11 starts. Wright gave up 11 hits, matching a season worst.
Austin walked three times to break his own six-year-old team record of 69 walks. The veteran first baseman has walked 70 times this year.
The series continues at 6 p.m. Saturday. ESPN 1380 (WTJK-AM) will join the broadcast in progress.
The RiverHawks are home at 7:05 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 26 for Miller Lite/2nd Cousin's Dollar Beer Night, when they play Kansas City.
