Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks News Release
FARGO, N.D. - The Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks have signed OF Marcos Rodriguez to a contract for the 2012 season.
Rodriguez, 28, played with the Ft. Worth (TX) Cats in 2011 and was acquired by the RedHawks in the American Association dispersal draft of the Ft. Worth roster this fall. He batted .341 with 29 doubles, four triples, four home runs, 70 RBIs and 71 runs scored in 97 games for the Cats.
Defensively, Rodriguez tied for second in the league with 13 outfield assists and was second in outfield double plays with four. He stole 14 bases in 20 attempts and posted a .405 on-base percentage for Ft. Worth.
Rodriguez has spent the past six seasons playing independent professional baseball in both the Can-Am League and the American Association. He has played for the Worcester (MA) Tornados (2006), Pensacola (FL) Pelicans (2007, 2009-10) and New Jersey Jackals (2007-08) prior to joining Ft. Worth last season. Rodriguez was originally signed as a free agent in his native Venezuela by the St. Louis Cardinals organization in 2002, and played three seasons in their organization.
"We want Marcos to come in and do what he has been doing for the past several years," said RedHawks Manager Doug Simunic. "He has always hit over .300, can produce runs with his bat and his legs and is a threat to gun down runners in the outfield. He's a good player and we're happy to sign him."
Rodriguez is the eighth player signed by the RedHawks for the 2012 season.
