
Redhawks inch closer to North Division first half title

FARGO, N.D. - The Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks inched closer to a Northern League North Division first half title with a 6-2 victory over the Gary SouthShore RailCats before a sell-out crowd of 4,549 at Newman Outdoor Field in Fargo. With the victory, the RedHawks improved to 26-16 overall. Gary dropped to 23-20 on the season with the loss.
After falling behind Gary 2-0 on Jose Yepez's two-run single in the top of the fourth inning, Fargo-Moorhead posted back-to-back three-run innings in the fourth and fifth innings to take a 6-2 lead. Clyde Williams delivered the big blow in the fourth, a towering two-run home run to right field. It was Williams' league-leading 13th home run of the season.
In the fifth, the RedHawks got an RBI triple from Bryon Jeffcoat and back-to-back RBI doubles from Richard Austin and Ruben Salazar to account for the scoring.
RedHawks starter Brandon Culp ran his record to 7-0 on the season with the victory. He pitched 8.0 innings, allowing two runs on six hits. Culp struck out six batters and walked four. Greg Bruso (1-5) took the loss for Gary. He pitched 5.0 innings, allowing six runs on nine hits. Bruso struck out seven batters and did not issue a walk.
The RedHawks and RailCats will continue their three-game series on Tuesday night at Newman Outdoor Field. Game time is 7:05 p.m., with Joe Sergent (6-1) getting the start for the RedHawks. Gary will counter with Jamie Bennett (4-1).
