Tonight's Game-- The RedHawks will try and bounce back after having their four-game winning streak snapped last night. Armando Galarraga makes the start when he and the RedHawks face the Zephyrs at 7:07 p.m.
Last Night-- Brad Hand tossed eight scoreless innings and the Zephyrs hit a pair of three-run homers in an 11-1 win over the RedHawks. Hand (7-4) kept the RedHawks offense off-kilter all night, scattering four hits over a season-high eight frames. He walked three and struck out six. The lefty only had multiple runners on base once and allowed just two runners in scoring position. New Orleans jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second. Two more followed in the third on RBI singles by Bryan Petersen and Donnie Murphy. Mike Cervenak hit a three-run home run in the fourth to make it 7-0. Luke Montz drove home each of the final four runs for the Zephyrs, with an RBI double in the fifth and a three-run homer in the seventh. Mike Hessman broke up the shutout in the ninth inning with a solo homer out to center field. RedHawks starting pitcher Brian Bass struggled over a season-low four innings. Bass (1-4) surrendered seven runs-four earned-and nine hits with three walks and a strikeout.
Tonight's Probable Pitchers-- Armando Galarraga aims for a third consecutive quality start...Sunday against Memphis, Galarraga held the Redbirds to a pair of runs over six innings with a season-high five strikeouts...He limited Memphis to an 0-for-6 mark with runners in scoring position, and opponents are now 0-for-15 against him this season with runners in scoring position...He has not allowed more than two runs in any of his first five starts...Opponents are hitting just .217 against him overall...He made his season debut at Zephyr Stadium on June 11...Over 4.2 innings, he faced 18 batters, allowing two walks and two hits--both to opposing pitcher Tom Koehler...Omar Poveda makes his second start for New Orleans after being promoted from Double-A Jacksonville...In his debut Sunday in Round Rock, Poveda allowed three runs and three hits over 6.1 IP and took the loss as the Zephyrs fell 4-0...Poveda made 14 starts with Jacksonville, going 6-3 with a 4.71 ERA...He is in his second season with the Marlins after coming over in a trade with Texas on July 29, 2010...He made one start for the RedHawks on June 1, 2009, taking a loss against Albuquerque after allowing four runs over seven innings.
Peak Point-- The RedHawks have reached a season-best 14 games above .500 twice. They have lost to New Orleans in their next game each time.
Out of the Ordinary-- Over nine games, the RedHawks are hitting .305 against the Zephyrs. The rest of the PCL only hits .253 against them. Their ERA against the RedHawks is 5.74, but 3.81 against the rest of the league. On the other hand, the Zephyrs hit .314 against the RedHawks but .257 against everyone else.
Century Club, Part I-- Jimmy Paredes added another hit last night, bringing his season total up to 104. He leads all Astros farmhands and is one of seven players in the PCL to reach triple digits. Scott Moore holds the next-highest total on the team at 78. He leads the team with 33rd multi-hit games.
Century Club, Part II-- The RedHawks blasted another homer last night, giving them 102 for the season. They are just one of three teams in all of the Minors with at least 100 dingers, joining the Sacramento River Cats (108) and High Desert Mavericks (115). In 2011, the RedHawks hit 88 homers the entire season.
27 and Counting-- Mike Hessman has hit four homers in his last six games, bringing his season total up to 27--tied with Wil Myers of Omaha for the most in all of the Minors. It's the most by a RedHawk in a single season since Nelson Cruz hit 37 in 2008. The Oklahoma City franchise record is 38, set by Dave Roberts in 1965. Hessman is on pace for 44 homers.
Justin (Maxwell) Time-- Justin Maxwell will begin a rehab assignment with the RedHawks tonight. Maxwell has been on the DL since June 26 with loose bodies in his left ankle. He was claimed off waviers from the Yankees on April 8 and is hitting .231 with eight homers and 24 RBIs over 62 games.
Marvelous Marwin-- Over his last four starts, Marwin Gonzalez has gone 9-for-14 with four extra-base hits and six RBIs. Currently on rehab assignment from the Astros, Gonzalez notched four extra-base hits in 69 at-bats with Houston this season.
Offensive Ebb and Flow-- In the RedHawks' last 13 wins, they have scored 111 runs (8.5 rpg). In their last 12 losses, they have scored just 22 runs (1.8 rpg). They have scored more than three in their losses just twice.
Great Divide-- Each of the RedHawks' last three losses have been by seven or more runs, totaling 31. They had lost just two games by seven or more runs all season before the recent stretch.
Against the Zephyrs-- The Zephyrs have won five of the first nine meetings of 2012...The Zephyrs have won two times after trailing with two outs in the ninth...Only once has either team won consecutive games against the other (New Orleans, June 8-9)...The RedHawks are hitting .305 against the Zephyrs, led by Jimmy Paredes (.450) and Brad Snyder (.414)...Nick Green has been a nightmare for OKC, hitting .500 with 11 RBIs...Mike Cervenak is hitting .421 and has driven in 14 runs...Tonight marks the second of nine straight games against each other, broken up by the All-Star Break.
