Sox Shut Down One Day After 19-Run Explosion in 5-1 Loss
July 6, 2012 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Colorado Springs Sky Sox News Release
After scoring 19 runs on the Fourth of July, the Colorado Springs Sky Sox (43-43) offense went quiet as the first place Reno Aces (52-36) held the Sky Sox to just one run in a 5-1 loss, snapping Colorado Springs' five-game home winning streak.
Aces right-hander Joe Martinez (8-5, 4.80 ERA) shut down the Sky Sox offense over 7.2 innings, his longest outing of the season, allowing no runs and three hits in his final 5.0 innings of work. The Sky Sox were unable to get a runner past first base in the final six innings of the game, and were held to six hits after they had totaled 69 hits in their previous five home games.
Reno racked up all the runs it would need for the win with three in the first inning, as Aces centerfielder Adam Eaton hit the first pitch from Colorado Springs starter Alex White (1-4, 4.01 ERA) for a home run and then fellow outfielders A.J. Pollock and Cole Gillespie singled in runs in back-to-back at-bats with two outs. White has allowed three runs in the first inning in two consecutive starts.
Sky Sox leftfielder Andrew Brown was the lone bright spot in the game offensively for the Springs as he collected his 76th RBI on a double in the third inning, the only extra-base hit of the game for the Sky Sox. Brown leads the Pacific Coast League with 46 extra-base hits on the season, and has 40 extra-base hits since the beginning of May. Brown has nine RBI in his last four games, and his 76 RBI trails only Reno infielder Ryan Wheeler's 83 RBI for the league lead.
The loss combined with a Salt Lake Bees win against Tacoma slides the Sox back in to a second place tie in the Pacific Northern Division, as both teams trail Reno by eight games for the division lead. The Sky Sox will look to gain ground in the division race as they send out left-hander Nick Schmidt (0-1, 9.00 ERA) against Aces left-hander Tyler Skaggs (1-0, 6.43 ERA), who was recently ranked the seventh best prospect in all of the Minor Leagues by Baseball America, at 7:05 p.m. MT.
