Tonight's scheduled starting pitchers:
RH Doug Mathis (1-1, 2.16) vs. RH Daniel Barone (1-2, 5.17)
TONIGHT: The RedHawks and New Orleans Zephyrs continue their 4-game series at AT&T Bricktown Ballpark after splitting the first two. Oklahoma City will pitch righthander Doug Mathis, who tossed a 7-inning complete game on Monday in the nightcap of a doubleheader at Omaha in a 2-1 OKC win. Mathis has made 4 appearances and each has been a quality start, although he's received only 6 runs of support while he's been in the game. New Orleans will pitch righthander Daniel Barone, who faced the RedHawks once in 2007 when the Marlins' affiliation was in Albuquerque, but did not pitch in Triple-A last year in a season split between Double-A Carolina and the Marlins. None of the current RedHawks faced Barone in his 2007 start, when he allowed 2 runs on 3 hits in 6 innings. The RedHawks' losing pitcher in that 7-2 Albuquerque win was John Koronka, now with New Orleans, who was the winner of last night's game over OKC.
ZEPHYRS LEVEL SERIES 1-1 ON FRIDAY: New Orleans used a pair of 3-run homers to spur an 11-2 win over the RedHawks last night. Gaby Sanchez pulled a 3-run blast into the RedHawks' bullpen to cap a 6-run second inning off of Jared Hyatt (0-2). After a run in the third, the Z's John Lindsey hit his second 3-run shot in as many games to open the lead to 10-0. John Koronka (1-1) pitched 5 scoreless innings for the win. OKC broke the shutout bid with a pair of runs off reliever Willie Collazo in the seventh on RBIs by Julio Borbon and Joaquin Arias.
NEW PARENT FOR THE ZEPHYRS: After 2 seasons in the New York Mets' organization, the New Orleans Zephyrs signed with the Florida Marlins in the off-season. Florida was previously affiliated with the Albuquerque Isotopes. New Orleans has been affiliated in its history with Milwaukee (1993-96), Houston (1997-2004), Washington (2005-06), the Mets (2007-08) and Florida.
SEASON HIGHS ESTABLISHED: Last night's 6-run second inning was the highest-scoring inning against OKC this year. The 11 runs and 13 hits allowed were each the second-highest totals against OKC in 2009. Jared Hyatt's 2 home runs surrendered marked the first time this season a RedHawk had allowed more than one homer in a game. After giving up just 6 homers through the first 18 games, OKC has allowed 3 homers in two games this series, all 3-run shots, the first homers of more than 2 runs all year.
WELCOME IN HUNTER, BANNISTER: After last night's game, the Rangers promoted a pair of righthanders, starter Tommy Hunter and reliever John Bannister, from Double-A Frisco. Jared Hyatt was transferred to the RoughRiders. Prior to last night's game, Texas recalled catcher Max Ramirez to take the spot occupied by Josh Hamilton, was placed on the 15-day DL. Also yesterday, reliever Derrick Turnbow exercised the out clause in his contract and was released.
BORBON MAINTAINS RBI LEAD: Outfielder Julio Borbon has driven in runs in 2 straight games and holds an 11-10 lead over Joaquin Arias in the team RBI race. Borbon leads the club in hits (25) and multi-hit games (8) and shares the lead with Esteban German with 5 stolen bases. Arias recorded his first 3-hit game of the year last night. He led the 2008 RedHawks in multi-hit games with 42, 10 of which were 3-hit games and a pair of 4-hit contests. Last year's league MVP Nelson Cruz was second on the club with 41 multi-hit games.
CUMPLEAÃOS FELIZ: Today is OKC righthander Neftali Feliz's 21st birthday.
DOT...DOT...DOT: Reliever Beau Vaughan extended his season-long scoreless streak to 14.1 innings with a pair of scoreless innings last night...Vaughan has allowed 5 hits with 16 strikeouts...OKC enters tonight's game 9-11 on the year...the RedHawks lost their 11th game of 2008 after a defeat on May 4, dropping their record to 20-11...last season started a week earlier and the 2009 RedHawks have had two postponements by rain that have yet to made up, accounting for the difference in games played.
