RH Kris Benson (4-3, 5.70) vs. RH Mitch Atkins (7-11, 6.85)

TODAY: The Oklahoma City RedHawks look to avoid a sweep in the afternoon finale of a 5-game series at Iowa. The Cubs handed the RedHawks their fourth straight defeat this series, and fifth overall, 7-4 last night. OKC has lost 11 of its last 13. The RedHawks are second in the American South, 8.5 games back of Albuquerque, which can clinch the division today with a win coupled with an OKC loss. Iowa is tied for second, 1.5 games back of Memphis in the American North. OKC will start righthander Kris Benson, who lost his OKC debut July 11 against the Cubs in his only start against them this season. Iowa counters with righty Mitch Atkins, who picked up a win in his only 2009 starts against the RedHawks July 10, allowing 5 runs in 6 innings.

FIVE IN A ROW: Iowa broke open a 2-1 game with a 5-run fourth inning last night in taking its fourth straight game of the series, 7-4. The loss was the RedHawks' fifth in a row, matching its longest road losing streak of the year. Micah Hoffpauir's first two hits of the series produced 3 runs against Luis Mendoza (6-7) who allowed 6 runs on 8 hits in 3.1 innings while working on three days rest. Brandon Boggs briefly tied the game at 1-1 with a home run in the third off Casey Fossum (6-4) who went 5 innings for the win. OKC rallied for 3 in the eighth to complete the scoring. Blake Parker worked a scoreless ninth for his 20th save.

PRINCIPAL PAIN: In 7 games at Iowa's Principal Park this season, the RedHawks have gone 1-6, losing 6 straight and totaling 11 runs on 41 hits for a .177 batting average (41-for-232). In 8 games between these clubs at AT&T Bricktown Ballpark, OKC was 4-4 with 40 runs scored and a .293 average.

FACING A SWEEP: OKC needs a win today to avoid being swept for the second time in three series. Colorado Springs handed the RedHawks their first sweep of the season Aug. 18-21, just before the current trip. Since becoming the RedHawks with the league merger and move to AT&T Bricktown Ballpark in 1998, OKC has not been swept in a 5-game series.

SLOW STARTS: The RedHawks have allowed the first run in 2 straight games, 5 out of 6 and 12 of the last 15 games. OKC has scored in the first inning once in the last 17 games, plating a single run Aug. 22 in Omaha in the road trip opener. The last time the RedHawks scored multiple runs in the first inning was Aug. 12 at Fresno, when Chris Davis hit a 2-run homer.

GERMAN REHABBING: Esteban German is on a rehab assignment for a right groin strain. German, who spent the first 4 months of the season with the RedHawks, is eighth in the PCL in batting at .318, third in on-base percentage at .417, fifth in walks with 63 and sixth in stolen bases with 33. He had his contract purchased by Texas Aug. 5.

SMOAK, FROSTAD TO SEE THE WORLD: Today is the last day on the active roster for Justin Smoak and Emerson Frostad. They'll be joining their respective countries' teams for the upcoming World Cup, Smoak with the United States and Frostad with Canada.

HINCKLEY ADDS AN INNING: Reliever Mike Hinckley extended his scoreless streak to 10 innings last night. He has not allowed a run in August, spanning 8 appearances.

NEW NAME FOR THE CHAMPIONSHIP GAME: The Bricktown Showdown, which the PCL champion has won all three years it's been played, is now the Triple-A Baseball National Championship Game. The annual meeting of the playoff champions from the International and Pacific Coast Leagues takes place at Oklahoma City's AT&T Bricktown Ballpark Sept. 22 at 6 pm CDT and will be broadcast live again this season on ESPN2 and Westwood One radio.
