Iowa Cubs News Release
Four Iowa Cubs pitchers combined to shutout the Oklahoma City RedHawks 2-0 Sunday afternoon at Principal Park.
Starter Mitch Atkins (8-11) struck out eight RedHawks and picked up his eighth win. Atkins allowed five hits in six innings. Blake Parker struck out two, pitching a scoreless ninth inning to earn his team-leading 21st save.
Andres Blanco tripled in the team's first at-bat to light up the offense. Blanco scored on John-Ford Griffin's ground out for a 1-0 first-inning lead. The score remained 1-0 until the eighth inning when Darwin Barney doubled off reliever Warner Madrigal to lead off. Barney advanced to third on Blanco's ground out and was driven in on a Matt Camp sacrifice bunt for the 2-0 final.
Oklahoma City's Kris Benson (4-4) was tagged with the loss allowing one run on four hits in seven innings of work. David Patton and John Gaub each threw a scoreless inning of relief for the Cubs Sunday.
Iowa heads to Omaha Monday for a four-game series against the Royals. The Iowa Cubs play their final home regular season series against the Albuquerque Isotopes September 4-7.
