Tonight's scheduled starting pitchers:

RH Luis Mendoza (6-6, 4.17) vs. LH Casey Fossum (5-4, 4.06)

TONIGHT: Fresh off an 86-pitch, complete-game loss in his last start on Tuesday, Luis Mendoza returns on three days rest to start for the RedHawks as they take on the Iowa Cubs. OKC has lost 4 straight and 10 of 12 and is down 0-3 in this 5-game series. Mendoza allowed just a second-inning solo homer in a 1-0 loss on Tuesday at Omaha. Tonight will be his fifth appearance and third start of 2009 against the Cubs. He's 0-1 with a 1.50 ERA in 12 innings against Iowa. Lefthander Casey Fossum is due to start for the Cubs, who are tied for second, 1.5 games back of Memphis in the American North. OKC is second, 8.5 games behind Albuquerque, whose magic number to clinch the American South Division is 3.

SMOAK'S BLAST AVOIDS SHUTOUT: A strike away from its second shutout loss in 4 games, Esteban German doubled and Justin Smoak homered in the ninth inning last night to avert a shutout in Iowa's 4-2 win. It was Smoak's first home run since Aug. 3 and snapped a 12-game span without an RBI. The RedHawks collected 5 hits in dropping their fourth straight game. During the losing streak, OKC has totaled 4 runs on 15 hits, dating to a 10-4 win over Omaha on Monday which featured a season-high 5 OKC homers.

MATTER OF PRINCIPAL: In 6 games at Iowa's Principal Park this season, the RedHawks have gone 1-5, losing 5 straight and totaling 7 runs on 34 hits for a .172 batting average. In 8 games between these clubs at AT&T Bricktown Ballpark, OKC was 4-4 with 40 runs scored and a .293 average.

FREEL JOINS THE CLUB: The Texas Rangers have signed veteran major leaguer Ryan Freel as a free agent and assigned him to OKC. Freel has been with three major league teams this season, most recently Kansas City, which designated him for assignment Aug. 5, requested unconditional release waivers Aug. 13 and released him Aug. 17. He began the year in the Baltimore organization after being acquired in an offseason trade with Cincinnati involving Ramon Hernandez. Freel was traded to the Chicago Cubs for Joey Gathright before being dealt to Kansas City for a player to be named July 6. He rehabbed a left hamstring strain with Iowa in June and went 3-for-9 with 3 RBIs in 3 games against OKC.

GERMAN REHABBING: Esteban German, OKC's All-Star representative this year, played the first game of his rehab assignment last night and went 1-for-4 with a double as the third baseman. German, who spent the first 4 months of the season with the RedHawks, is sixth in the PCL in batting at .321, third in on-base percentage at .420, fifth in walks with 62 and sixth in stolen bases with 33. He had his contract purchased by Texas Aug. 5. He's rehabbing right groin strain that landed him on the 15-day DL Aug. 18, retro Aug. 14.
