Oklahoma City Comets News Release
HIGHLIGHTS: The Oklahoma RedHawks fell 6-1 to the Memphis Redbirds Monday afternoon at AT&T Bricktown Ballpark. Former Redhawk John Wasdin threw seven perfect innings before allowing a leadoff home run to Chris Shelton in the eighth.
Memphis tallied single runs in the second and third innings, and got a two run home run from D'Angelo Jimenez in the fourth to build an early lead for Wasdin, making a spot start after 27 straight relief appearances for Memphis. The 35 year-old right-hander struck out six of the first nine batters he faced. The Redbirds added a run in the fifth to build a 5-0 lead. Wasdin added five strikeouts over the next four full innings and finished with 11 overall, and did not walk a batter. Oklahoma only hit two balls out of the infield over the first seven innings.
Shelton led off the eighth inning with his fifth home run of the year for the RedHawks to break up the perfect game and shutout. Ryan Roberts followed with a single to knock Wasdin from the game after 92 pitches, the most he has thrown in any game since April 21 while still a member of the Memphis rotation. Jason Motte took over for the Redbirds and recorded the final six outs of the game, striking out five of the six batters he faced.
Wasdin (7-6) earned the victory, and RedHawks starting pitcher Tommy Hunter (1-2) took the loss. Offensively, David Freese led Memphis with four hits and Jimenez drove in three of the six runs. Oklahoma managed just the two eighth inning hits and no walks while striking out a season-high 16 times.
The RedHawks will head to Salt Lake to open an eight-game, two city road trip on Tuesday evening. Brandon McCarthy will make his first Oklahoma start on a Major League rehab assignment from the Texas Rangers.
