Published on July 21, 2008 under Pacific Coast League (PCL1) News Release
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -The Pacific Coast League today announced Tacoma outfielder Wladimir Balentien and New Orleans pitcher Brandon Knight have been named PCL Hitter and Pitcher of the week award winners, respectively, for the week of July 14th-20th.
Balentien, the 2007 PCL rookie of the year award winner, slugged four home runs and collected eight RBI in just four games during the all-star break shortened week to earn his first hitter award. A native of Willemstad, Curacao, Balentien added nine hits and nine runs for the Rainiers. The 24-year-old was signed as a non-drafted free agent in 2000 by the Seattle Mariners.
Knight needed just one start to take home the pitching award. He tossed six scoreless innings against Albuquerque on July 19th and scattered three hits and three walks and struck out twelve batters. His week was capped-off with his being named to the 2008 USA baseball roster for the Olympic Games in Beijing, China next month. The Oxnard, California native is in his first season with the New York Mets organization.
