Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks News Release
WINNIPEG, Manitoba - Entering a three-game series with Winnipeg on Friday the RedHawks needed to sweep the Goldeyes to win the Moosehead Mug and on Sunday afternoon Fargo-Moorhead did just that winning their ninth straight game by a score of 5-2 in front of 6,211 at CanWest Global Park in Winnipeg, Manitoba.
Fargo-Moorhead put the first run on the board in the top of the first inning but their bats were silenced over the next three-plus innings as Winnipeg starter Glenn Bott retired 10 consecutive RedHawks batters. During that stretch the Goldeyes managed to grab a 2-1 lead scoring one run in the bottom of the first inning and another in the third. The lead was their first and only during the three-game set.
With one out in the top of the fifth inning Bott was looking to send the 12th straight RedHawks back to the dugout but was unable to do so as Craig Ringe hit his sixth solo home run of the season to pull Fargo-Moorhead even with Winnipeg.
The RedHawks regained the lead in the seventh inning by scoring two run off of Bott before the Goldeyes were forced to go to the bullpen. Howard Pence finished the inning for Winnipeg but not before the RedHawks were able to take a 4-2 lead.
Jeff McLaughlin got the start for Fargo-Moorhead and threw 6 1/3 innings in which he allowed two runs off of six hits to improve to 3-1 on the season. McLaughlin was relieved by Brian Hewitt who entered from the bullpen to record the final two outs in the seventh inning. Hewitt also pitched the eighth inning and gave up just one run in his 1 2/3 innings of work.
With a 4-2 lead going into the ninth inning Jesse Hoorelbeke added an insurance run with his fourth hit of the day, hitting his league-leading 21st home run of the season to make it 5-2. The homer came off of Winnipeg's Josh Kite who pitched the final inning for Winnipeg.
Brandon Culp came in and faced four batters in the ninth inning in just his second relief appearance of the season and picked up his first save since July 9, 2002.
With the win the RedHawks grabbed the Moosehead Mug for the third consecutive year and will finish the regular season with a 10-9 record against the Goldeyes.
After a day off on Monday the RedHawks (14-8, 46-24) will open a three-game homestand with the Edmonton Cracker-Cats on Tuesday. Game time on Tuesday is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. with great tickets still available by logging onto www.fmredhawks.com or by calling the RedHawks ticket office at 701-235-6161.
NOTES: With 26 games remaining in the season Jesse Hoorelbeke is closing in on Darryl Motley for the most home runs in a single season for Fargo-Moorhead. Hoorelbeke currently has 21 home runs on the season and trails Motley by just five home runs. Knott hit 26 home runs in 1996.
Joe Mathis is currently averaging .94 runs a game and is on pace to score over 90 runs which would establish a new club record. Fargo-Moorhead's current single-season record stands at 84 runs scored by Chad Akers in 1996. Mathis is also on track to set a new franchise record for most hits in a season. Chris Coste and Mathis are currently tied for the club record with 118 hits and Mathis is on pace to collect of 134 hits this season.
During their current nine-game winning streak the RedHawks are batting .279 as a team and have out-scored their opponents 44-17. Fargo-Moorhead's pitching staff has 1.71 ERA in the last nine games and has managed to hold opposing teams to a combined .204 batting average.
