Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release

Edmonton, Alberta - Mike Kusiewicz and two relief pitchers combined to scatter eight base hits as the Edmonton Cracker-Cats shutout the Gary SouthShore RailCats 2-0 on Sunday afternoon to take two of three games in the series. The RailCats fell to 9-13 in the second half, three games out of first place in the Eastern Division.

All eight Gary hits in the game were singles and the RailCats went a combined 1 for 15 with men on base as Kusiewicz, Quintin Oldenburg, and Scott Richmond combined on the shutout. Kusiewicz went the first seven innings, allowing seven hits and one walk with five strikeouts. Oldenburg and Richmond each pitched a scoreless inning.

The only runs of the game came in the fifth inning. With one out, Stubby Clapp singled to center. After Ashley Freeman popped to second, Jeremy Ware tripled off the glove of third baseman Tanner Townsend as Clapp scored on the ball that went down the left field line into the Edmonton bullpen. Kyle Nichols followed with a single to right to bring in Ware and make it 2-0.

The RailCats best chance to score came in the fourth when Jermaine Allensworth and Jarrod Patterson started the inning with consecutive singles. But Andy Rohleder hit into a double play and Steve Haake struck out to end the threat.

In the sixth, Townsend singled to left and Allensworth walked with one out. But Townsend was thrown out trying to steal third and Patterson struck out to end the inning. The RailCats did not advance another runner past first the rest of the day.

RailCats starter Willie Glen (7-3) lost for the first time since May 31st. He pitched out of a bases loaded, no out jam in the fourth after he began the inning by walking the first three batters. But Glen got back-to-back strikeouts before Chris Becker flied to left to end the inning.

Glen left after the fifth, allowing four hits and two runs with six walks and four strikeouts.

The RailCats play at Calgary on Monday afternoon at 2:35 p.m. Travis Kerber (1-4, 3.89) will make his first start since 2004.
