Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks News Release
FARGO, N.D. - Fargo-Moorhead used three solo home runs on Saturday as the RedHawks won 7-2 and clinched the final regular season series against the Winnipeg Goldeyes in front of 6,621 at CanWest Global Park.
The RedHawks opened the scoring in the top of the third inning when Kory Wayment bunted his way onto first base, stole second and advanced to third on a passed ball before scoring on a Joe Mathis double. The next batter, Brent Krause, also doubled to score Mathis and give the RedHawks an early 2-0 lead.
Their lead was short-lived however as the Goldeyes evened things up in the bottom half of the frame. Fargo-Moorhead quickly regained the lead in the fourth inning when Ruben Salazar scored what proved to be the game-winning run on a solo home run to left field. The RedHawks touched Winnipeg starter Tony Evans for one more in the inning and drove him from the game after 4.2 innings of work after Jesse Hoorelbeke hit a one-out home run in the fifth inning followed by a Harry Berrios two-out home run.
In all the RedHawks collected six runs on nine hits as they handed Evans his first loss of the season.
Todd George got the start for the RedHawks and went 5.0 innings while allowing two runs off of five hits to improve to 7-2 on the season. In the sixth George gave way to Josh Gray who allowed just three hits as he worked four scoreless innings to earn his fourth save of the year.
Aside from the three solo home runs the RedHawks were led offensively by short stop Kory Wayment who went 3-for-5 at the plate and scored three runs.
With the win the RedHawks (13-8, 45-24) extended their winning streak to a season-best eight games and will look to complete the series sweep of the Goldeyes (11-11, 38-32) on Sunday afternoon. The season series between the two teams is even at nine games apiece with the winner of Sunday's game staking claim to the Moosehead Mug, the annual award given to the season series winner between the two ballclubs.
Fargo-Moorhead is set to send Jeff McLaughlin (2-1, 3.18) to the mound in the series finale and Winnipeg will counter with Glenn Bott (6-3, 2.89). The first pitch is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. and all the action can be heard on 970 AM WDAY with play-by-play announcer Scott Miller.
