Oklahoma City Comets News Release

TONIGHT: The Oklahoma City RedHawks open a 3-game set with the Iowa Cubs at Principal Park. The RedHawks enter the series after splitting in Nashville, winning 5-1 win last night. The RedHawks are second in the American South, a half-game back of Albuquerque. OKC dropped 2 out of 3 to the Cubs in the first series between these teams in mid-June in Oklahoma City. Iowa is second in the American North, 3.5 back of Nashville. Righthander Willie Eyre will make a brief start for OKC after being optioned this week. Guillermo Moscoso, the originally scheduled starter, will follow Eyre. Because of yesterday's recall of Jeff Samardzija, Iowa's starter was undecided at press time.

SPLIT IN NASHVILLE: The RedHawks enter this series off a 5-1 win in Nashville last night to gain a split of the 4-game set. Three OKC pitchers limited the Sounds to 3 hits, which matched the fewest allowed by the RedHawks in a game this season. Rehabber Dustin Nippert tossed 5 innings, allowing a solo homer, to get the win. Brian Gordon pitched 3 scoreless innings and Warner Madrigal finished up with a 1-2-3 ninth. It was the only relatively "normal" score in Nashville, as each of the first 3 games of that series featured an 11-1 score at some point. Nashville won by that score Monday. The RedHawks built an 11-1 lead through 8 innings on Sunday in a 12-1 win and the Sounds led 11-1 on Saturday after 5 innings en route to an 11-5 decision.

TANDEM STARTERS: In a version of the "tandem starter" system, right-handed reliever Willie Eyre will get the start for the RedHawks tonight in order to increase his pitch count. After his appearance, Eyre, who was optioned by Texas on Monday, will be followed by Guillermo Moscoso.

Eyre's bio is at the bottom of page 5 of today's notes. Moscoso's information is on page 2 in the area normally reserved for the starter.

JOSH HAMILTON, PART 2: Texas Rangers slugger Josh Hamilton is set to join OKC tonight on a rehab assignment as he recovers from surgery to repair an abdominal tear performed June 9. Hamilton served as Double-A Frisco's DH on Monday and went 1-for-4 with an RBI, walk and run scored. Hamilton made a 2-game rehab appearance with the RedHawks May 10-11 in Round Rock while recovering from a strained intercostal muscle in his left rib cage. Hamilton went 2-for-5 with a double and 3 walks for OKC in May. In 35 games for Texas this season, Hamilton is batting .240 with 6 homers and 24 RBIs.

Information on Hamilton is available on the back page of the notes.

BULLPEN TOUGH: In the last 10 games, the RedHawks' bullpen has combined to pitch 35 innings while allowing 5 runs on 21 hits, a 1.29 ERA. The bullpen's ERA has dropped or stayed the same following each of the last 10 games.

TRYING FOR .500: A win tonight would put OKC at .500 for the first time since an April 23 win squared their record at 7-7. The RedHawks have had 2 chances this trip to reach .500, but lost both games. OKC has not been above .500 this season.

GERMAN STREAKING: Esteban German has a 17 game on-base streak dating to June 12. In that span, he has hits in 13 games, has extended the streak by walk 3 times and by a hit-by-pitch once. German leads the team with a .312 batting average, 41 RBIs and 23 stolen bases. He's third in the PCL in on-base percentage at .427 and third in walks with 49.
