Redbirds take on New Orleans Baby Cakes
June 5, 2017 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Memphis Redbirds News Release
Memphis Redbirds (34-22) at New Orleans Baby Cakes (19-36)
THE GAME TODAY'S GAME: The Memphis Redbirds embark on a brief four-game road trip to take on the New Orleans Baby Cakes (Marlins). Memphis possesses the second-best record in the league while New Orleans has the lowest winning percentage in the circuit. Today's game will be broadcast live on Sports56 and 87.7 FM and internet webcast at MemphisRedbirds.com, with Steve Selby on the call.
ON THE HILL: Memphis hands the ball to reigning PCL Player of the Month Luke Weaver in tonight's opener. Weaver was dominant in his last outing on Memorial Day, giving up just two solo homers in seven innings against Iowa. He also tied a season-high with nine strikeouts. The righthander doesn't have enough innings to qualify, but would rank second on the PCL leaderboard in ERA. Weaver earned the Opening Day nod against the Baby Cakes, lasting two innings before succumbing to back spasms that landed him on the DL.
SCHEDULE WITH NEW ORLEANS: Memphis and New Orleans meet for the second time this year after opening the season with a five-game set. The Redbirds took four of five from the Cakes, including two last at-bat wins. This is the final trip to New Orleans for Memphis this season, but the Baby Cakes come to AutoZone Park for eight more matchups. Memphis has not won five-plus games in New Orleans since 2013 (5-3).
THIS DATE IN REDBIRDS HISTORY (June 5, 2000): Memphis played the longest game in it's history, lasting 5:38. The Redbirds eventually defeated Las Vegas, 6-5, in 18 innings.
THE SEASON ABOUT THE LAST ONE: The Redbirds and Storm Chasers were rained out on Sunday. However, on Saturday, Memphis started hot, scoring six runs over its first four at-bats to cruise to a 6-1 win over Omaha. All nine starters recorded a hit, led by Nick Martini and Harrison Bader, who contributed three hits a piece.
On the mound, Mike Mayers tied a career-high with 10 strikeouts in seven innings of work. The righthander earned his fourth win of the season with his fifth quality start.
