Bees Face 51s to Open Season-Long Homestand
June 5, 2017 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Salt Lake Bees News Release
The Salt Lake Bees open a season-long 11-game homestand with their first four games of the year against the Las Vegas 51s, beginning Monday at Smith's Ballpark.
Salt Lake returns home after taking three of four from El Paso and remains in first place in the Pacific Coast League's Pacific Southern division, two and a half games ahead of second-place Albuquerque. Kaleb Cowart had a terrific series against the Chihuahuas, collecting seven hits in 16 at-bats (.438) and hitting his fourth homer of the year. Cowart has collected multiple hits in four straight games and enters the homestand on a seven-game hitting streak. Several new faces have also made immediate impacts in the Bees lineup, as Michael Bourn, Cesar Puello, and Jefry Marte all made their season debuts in El Paso. On Saturday, Puello collected three hits in his first game as a Bee and Bourn also delivered three hits in his second contest with Salt Lake. Jefry Marte notched a two-hit night and hit a solo homer in his season debut on Sunday. Another new face, eight-year big league veteran Doug Fister, is expected to pitch for the Bees on Tuesday night.
Last year, Salt Lake went 4-12 overall against the 51s and 2-6 at Smith's Ballpark. Las Vegas boasts five prospects ranked among the New York Mets' top 30 by mlb.com, headlined by the Mets' top two prospects, infielders Amed Rosario and Dominic Smith . Rosario's 79 hits are second-most in the PCL this season and his .346 batting average ranks fifth among qualified PCL batters, while Smith's 71 hits rank second on the 51s behind Rosario and 5th in the PCL, and his 15 doubles and 39 runs batted in lead Las Vegas. Infielder Gavin Cecchini ranks as the Mets' sixth-best prospect and sits third on the team (behind Rosario and Smith) with 57 hits and 32 runs scored, while mlb.com pegs outfielder Brandon Nimmo as the Mets' seventh-best prospect and infielder Phillip Evans as New York's 28th-best farmhand.
After their series against Las Vegas, the Bees welcome the Albuquerque Isotopes to town for a three-game weekend series. The teams will wear retro uniforms as part of the Bees' 70's night celebration on Friday night, and post-game fireworks will follow Saturday night's superhero-themed game. Before Sunday's series finale, the Bees will host a 45-minute yoga session in center field. For tickets and additional information, visit slbees.com.
