Redbirds' rally falls short

MEMPHIS, TN - Memphis' ninth-inning rally came up one run shy in a 7-6 loss to Nashville Thursday night at AutoZone Park.

After claiming a 4-1 lead in the first inning the Redbirds had to battle back to within a run of the Sounds in the ninth inning. The ‘Birds pushed two runs across in the bottom of the final frame before Sounds reliever Ryan Houston struck out David Freese with the bases loaded to end the game. Nashville took the lead with a five-run fourth inning thanks to four hits and two walks. Mat Gamel and Brendan Katin both drove in three runs each for the Sounds in the win.

Nashville starter Tim Dillard earned the win with six strong innings. Houston notched the save with the strikeout of Freese. Blake Hawksworth took the loss allowing six runs on six hits over four innings.

The Redbirds and Sounds wrap up their four-game series tomorrow night with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m. Memphis will send Clayton Mortensen to the hill to face Nashville's Lindsay Gulin.
