Portland Beavers News Release

PORTLAND, Ore. - Chad Gaudin (GO-dan) led a group of four Portland pitchers on a three-hit shutout, Will Venable's two-run homer in the sixth inning broke a scoreless game and the Beavers beat the Sacramento River Cats 3-0 Thursday night at PGE Park.

The win snapped the Beavers' three-game losing streak to the River Cats (8-7) and pushed Portland's record on its first homestand to 5-2.

Emil Brown was 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored for the Beavers (9-6).

The teams combined for just six hits over the first 5 ½ innings, but Brown doubled to lead off the bottom of the sixth and Venable's third home run in the last three games gave the Beavers a 2-0 lead.

Brown tacked on a two-out RBI single in the seventh to push the lead to 3-0.

Neither starter factored in the decision, but both were impressive. Gaudin, a former River Cat making his second start for Portland after recently signing with the organization, fanned seven and held the River Cats to just two hits while issuing no walks in five innings of work.

His counterpart, Gio Gonzalez, struck out eight and yielded one walk and three hits in 4 2/3 scoreless innings for Sacramento. Both pitchers were on limited pitch counts.

Jon Ellis (2-0) went two scoreless innings for the Beavers to pick up his second win of the season. Mike Ekstrom worked a perfect eighth and Greg Burke closed out things in the ninth for his third save.

Jared Lansford (0-1) surrendered three runs and four hits across 2 1/3 innings of relief in the loss.

The Beavers conclude their opening homestand with a special morning game on Friday. First pitch is 11:05 a.m., while gates open at 9 a.m. for the first US Bank Art & Science of Baseball School Day presented by Intel.
