Iowa Cubs News Release
For the second day in a row, the Iowa Cubs were the beneficiaries of an outstanding pitching performance, as J.R. Mathes (3-1) threw six shutout innings to lead Iowa to a 6-0 victory over Albuquerque Thursday evening at Principal Park. Bobby Scales hit his second home run in as many nights and Chris Robinson continued his hot hitting with a pair of hits, including a two-run triple in the four-run Iowa sixth inning.
Mathes got the starting nod from manager Bobby Dickerson in place of Jeff Samardzija, who was recalled by the Chicago Cubs on Thursday. Mathes, a 2008 Pacific Coast League All-Star, threw just 72 pitches as he faced just one batter over the minimum in his six innings of work Thursday night.
The Cubs took a 1-0 lead in the third inning when Sam Fuld lined a single to right field off Albuquerque starter Shawn Estes (0-1) to plate Andres Blanco, who had doubled two batters earlier.
The floodgates opened for Iowa in the sixth inning, as the Cubs tagged Albuquerque reliever Stephen Randolph for four runs. The biggest blow was Scales' two run home run over the left field fence that gave the Cubs a 3-0 lead. Robinson drove in Jason Dubois and Doug Deeds, who had each walked, to chase Randolph and give the Cubs a 5-0 cushion.
Jason Waddell, Jeff Stevens and Kevin Hart each threw a scoreless inning to help the Cubs improve their record to 10-5. Waddell and Stevens have now combined to throw 13.1 scoreless innings this season.
The Cubs will wrap up the first homestand of the 2009 season when they play the Isotopes in the final game of their four-game series tomorrow night at 7:05 p.m. Fireworks will follow the game, as they will every Friday night home game this season.
