Portland Beavers News Release

MEMPHIS - Danny Haren struck out 10 and led three Memphis pitchers to combine on a six-hit, 1-0 shutout victory over the Portland Beavers at AutoZone Park Tuesday night.

Haren (5-2) worked the first six innings, allowing four hits and walking two on his way to his fifth win of the season, tying him for the league lead.

Jason Simontacchi gave up a hit in pitching the scoreless seventh and eighth, and Chad Paronto struck out two in the ninth for his third save.

Jason Bowers and pinch-hitter Luis Ortiz teamed up to provide the necessary offense in the sixth inning. Bowers laced a two-out double down the left field line off Portland starter Justin Germano (0-1) and scored the game's only run when Ortiz singled off reliever Blaine Neal.

The loss tainted another solid outing for Germano. The right-hander, who joined the Beavers on May 3 from Class AA Mobile, allowed seven hits and a pair of walks in 5.2 innings and has given up just two earned runs in his first 11.2 innings over his first two Triple-A starts with Portland.

Yadier Molina was 3-for-4 with a double and Bowers was 2-for-2 with a walk for the Redbirds (15-16).

The loss snapped the Beavers' three-game winning streak and marked the first time they were shut out since a 7-0 loss to Sacramento on July 22, 2003.

Jon Knott had two hits to stretch his current hitting streak to eight games. Xavier Nady was hit by a pitch in the fourth and singled in the sixth in his first game back with the club after missing three weeks with an ankle injury.

Nady has hit in seven straight with the Beavers (16-17).

The two teams reconvene Wednesday at 11:05 a.m. (Pacific).

NOTES: The Beavers activated Nady from the disabled list on Tuesday and transferred Portland native Joe Gerber to Class AA Mobile ... Portland is now 3-1 in shutout games ... the Beavers have allowed just three runs over their last three games and came into the game with a PCL-best 3.64 ERA ...
