Edmonton Trappers News Release

The Edmonton Trappers overcame a three-run deficit to defeat the Colorado Springs Sky Sox 5-3 Tuesday night at TELUS Field. The win puts an end to a three-game losing streak for the Trappers, who won just one of eight games on a road trip which concluded on Monday in Portland. After struggling in clutch situations in the Portland series Edmonton's batters came through on Tuesday night, going 5-for-11 with runners in scoring position. The Trappers have come from behind to win eight games this season. Edmonton evens their record at 16-16 with the victory and are now 5-3 at TELUS Field. Including the games the club played in Yuma, Arizona the Trappers are 11-5 in home games. Edmonton and Colorado Springs continue this four-game series on Wednesday night at TELUS Field.

Colorado Springs broke through with an unearned run in the third inning off Edmonton starter Scott Downs (4-1). Catcher J.D. Closser led off the inning with a double to left field and scored later in the inning when a throw by third baseman Scott Hodges got away from first baseman Jorge Toca. The Sky Sox increased their lead to three runs in the fifth inning. Shortstop Clint Barmes doubled down the right field line to open the frame and scored on a one-out home run by second baseman Erick Almonte, his sixth longball of the season. Edmonton battled back in the bottom of the fifth to tie the game with three unearned runs off Colorado Springs starter Jason Young (5-2). Shortstop Maicer Izturis was hit by a pitch to leadoff the inning. With two out Toca reached on an error by third baseman Garrett Atkins. Ryan Church's single scored Izturis from second and catcher Randy Knorr followed with a double to left field that plated both Toca and Church.

The Trappers took the lead in the sixth inning with two runs off Young. With one out in the frame pinch-hitter Brian Harris drew a walk. He advanced to second on a base hit by Izturis and moved to third on an error by center fielder Choo Freeman. Second baseman Anthony Medrano followed with a single to right field that plated Harris with the go-ahead run. Toca delivered an insurance run with a two-out single that scored Izturis from second base. Downs worked his way out of jams in almost all of his 6.0 innings of work, allowing three runs, two earned, on eight hits and three walks. He fanned two en route to his fourth win of the season. The bullpen took over in the seventh inning and provided the lefty with 3.0 shutout innings of relief. Rob Stanifer tossed a perfect seventh inning and left-hander Joe Horgan got one out in the eighth before turning the ball over to closer Pat Mahomes, who recorded the final five outs for his fifth save of the season.
