Portland Beavers News Release
PORTLAND, Ore. - The San Diego Padres and Portland Beavers announced today that Beavers right-hander Brandon Puffer has had his contract purchased by the Padres and that left-hander Matt Hampton has been transferred to Portland from Class AA Mobile.
Puffer, 28, was 1-0 with a 1.57 ERA (4er, 23.0ip) in 15 games with the Beavers, including a stretch of 20.1 innings over 12 appearances without allowing an earned run. Puffer, an 11-year professional who was signed by the Padres as a minor league free agent in the off-season, is 3-3 with a 4.60 ERA (46er, 90.0ip) in 68 major league appearances over parts of two seasons with the Houston Astros (2002-03).
Puffer, originally a 27th-round selection of the Minnesota Twins in 1994, takes the roster spot of right-hander Antonio Osuna, who was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a right-groin strain on Wednesday.
Hampton, 26, joins the Beavers after going 3-0 with a 3.00 ERA (4er, 12.0ip) and a save in 13 appearances with Class AA Mobile to start the season.
The left-hander spent the entire 2003 campaign with the Beavers, going 1-3 with a 5.83 ERA (30er, 46.1ip) in 33 appearances.
Hampton signed with the Padres as a non-drafted free agent on Sept. 18, 2001 after beginning his career with Chillicothe of the independent Frontier League in 2001.
