Memphis Redbirds News Release
MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The Memphis Redbirds scored six unanswered runs for a 7-4 Opening Night victory over the visiting Iowa Cubs on Thursday night at AutoZone Park.
The Redbirds trailed early at 4-1 in the third inning, but rode clutch hitting from third baseman Scott Moore (2-for-3, 2 2B, R, BB) and first baseman Xavier Scruggs (1-4, HR, 2 RBI, 2 R) to battle back for the win. Every Redbirds position player recorded at least one hit in the 13-hit attack, while five players came away with two apiece.
Stephen Piscotty (2-for-4, 2B, 2 R) collected the club's first hit and scored the first run of the season as Memphis took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. After Piscotty lined to left on his first pitch of the night, Moore followed with his first RBI double of the evening.
Iowa scored all four of its runs in the third against Marco Gonzales, thanks to three separate two-out RBI singles from Addison Russell (2-for-4), Kris Bryant (1-for-4), and Junior Lake (1-for-4).
In the bottom half of the third, shortstop Dean Anna (2-for-5) singled, moved to third on a Ty Kelly (2-for-5) base hit, and came home to score on Piscotty's RBI groundout. Memphis knotted the contest at 4-4 in the fifth, thanks to an RBI single from Anna. The shortstop would later come around to score the tying run on a wild pitch from Iowa starter Donn Roach.
Consecutive doubles from Piscotty and Moore in the seventh gave Memphis the go-ahead 5-4 lead, followed by Scruggs' line drive blast over the left field videowall.
Gonzales came away with a no-decision in his first start of the season, allowing all four of his runs in the fourth. The left-hander also fanned six and walked none while scattering eight singles.
Memphis pitchers retired 17 of the final 18 I-Cubs batters to end the evening, including a stretch of 16 in a row. Nick Greenwood (1-0) retired all four batters he faced in relief to earn the win. Mitch Harris tossed a scoreless ninth to record his first career Triple-A save.
The Redbirds and Cubs continue their four-game series at 7:05 pm at AutoZone Park on Friday night. Left-hander Tim Cooney will toe the rubber for Memphis against Iowa righty Carlos Pimentel. The first 2,000 fans will receive a Redbirds T-shirt upon entry, courtesy of Christian Brothers University. Gates open at 6:00 pm.
