Gwinnett Stripers News Release
LAWRENCEVILLE, GA - Following an 11-3 Gwinnett victory on Thursday, the Rochester Red Wings (29-32) flipped the script on the G-Braves on Friday night at Coolray Field, scoring 11 runs on 12 hits and coasting to an 11-0 win. Red Wings' starter Andrew Albers threw a 9.0-inning complete-game shutout to hand Gwinnett its most lopsided loss of the season.
Gwinnett starter Yohan Flande (L, 3-5), pitching on short rest, did not have an answer for the Red Wings' bats. The left-hander yielded seven runs on seven hits and recorded just two outs in the first inning before exiting. It was his shortest outing since July 13, 2012, when he surrendered six runs in 0.2 innings against the Louisville Bats.
Flande was around the plate, throwing 23 of his 34 pitches for strikes, but the Red Wings collected four two-strike hits to jump out a commanding lead. Antoan Richardson led off with a single, moved over on a groundout and scored on an RBI single by Oswaldo Arcia. After a walk to Deibinson Romero, Jeff Clement lined a three-run homer over the right field fence, making it 4-0. Rochester was not done there, as Dan Rohlfing singled and Doug Bernier doubled, putting runners on second and third with one out. Ray Olmedo drove in another run with a groundout to second, and Eric Fryer and Richardson added RBI hits, extending the lead to 7-0.
Rochester continued to score, adding two more runs in the top of the second inning against reliever Juan Cedeno. Arcia led off with a walk and was followed by back-to-back singles by Romero and Clement to load the bases. Rohlfing made it 8-0 with an RBI groundout and Bernier made it 9-0 with an RBI single.
Wirfin Obispo turned in 3.0 innings and Kameron Loe added a scoreless eighth, but the Red Wings added two more runs in the ninth off left-hander Joe Beimel. Romero and Clement clubbed back-to-back solo homers to extend the lead to 11-0.
In the ninth, Romero and Clement clubbed back-to-back solo homers, extending their lead. For Clement it was his second dinger of the game and his ninth on the season.
Albers (W, 4-2) mixed his pitches well, scattering six hits over 9.0 innings while walking none and striking out seven. The Rochester lefty is the first pitcher to throw a complete-game shutout against Gwinnett this season.
Offensively, Tyler Pastornicky extended his hitting streak to 10 games with single in the fourth inning. He ended the night 2-for-4, while five others G-Braves each picked up one hit.
Clement paced the Red Wings, going 4-for-4 with two homers and two RBI, while Romero added two hits, three runs and one RBI.
The Gwinnett Braves begin a four-game series against the Columbus Clippers on Saturday night, first pitch scheduled for 7:05 PM. Atlanta Braves' right-hander Brandon Beachy (0-0, 4.50) is slated to make a minor league injury rehab start for the G-Braves, while the Clippers will counter with right-hander Trevor Bauer (2-2, 4.63). Listen to the game on WDUN 550 AM and 102.9 FM with Tony Schiavone calling the play-by-play.
The first 2,000 fans in attendance on Saturday will receive a Gwinnett Braves Fifth Anniversary Logo Baseball Bank, courtesy of Delta Community Credit Union. Tickets are on sale now by calling the Coolray Field Box Office at (678) 277-0340 or by visiting gwinnettbraves.com.
