Chiefs Stun RailRiders with Brown Homer

The Syracuse Chiefs, the Triple-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals, came back to stun the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders, 4-2 on Friday. The Chiefs fell into an early 2-0 hole, but Corey Brown's three-run home run in the eighth inning proved to be the game winner.

The Chiefs trailed 2-1 in the bottom of the eighth when Chris Rahl led off the inning with a double. Then Will Rhymes placed a sacrifice bunt to third, moving Rahl to third base. Following a walk to Marrero, Sam Demel replaced Dellin Betances on the mound. The first batter he faced, Corey Brown, launched a booming three-run home run over the right-field wall, giving the Chiefs a 4-2 lead.

Scranton/Wilkes-Barre got on the board first in the top of the third inning. After walks to both Bobby Wilson and Thomas Neal, Ronnier Mustelier doubled to deep center field, scoring both Wilson and Neal. That was the only hit Chiefs starter Ross Ohlendorf allowed.

Syracuse plated its first run in the bottom of the fourth inning. Rahl led off the with a base hit, followed by a single from Rhymes. Then, Marrero singled on a sharp line drive to center field. That knocked in Rahl to cut the RailRiders lead to 2-1.

Chiefs pitcher Tanner Roark topped off a great day for Syracuse arms with a scoreless ninth inning to clinch the victory. Starter Ross Ohlendorf and reliever Ryan Tatusko combined for 8 innings of three-hit baseball and allowed just two runs.

Syracuse and Pawtucket begin a four-game series on Saturday at 7:05. Right-hander Matt Torra takes the mound for the Chiefs while the Red Sox send right-hander Brandon Workman.
