Red Claws Stop Armor Win Streak Cold with 100-94 Victory

PORTLAND, ME -The Maine Red Claws (14-22) stopped the Springfield Armor's 8-game winning streak dead in its tracks while ending a four game home skid of their own, defeating their bitter rival 100-94 in front of a sold out crowd at the Portland Expo.

Starting with a strong lead, Maine led for the entirety of the first half, outscoring the Armor 28-20 in the first period and holding on to a 57-51 lead going into the half. Springfield gained momentum in the third, bringing it within two points, but Maine battled back bravely. The Red Claws scored six points in the last minute alone to end the Armor's streak, 100-94.

Morris Almond, the Adidas Player of the Game, led all players in scoring with 34 points and 10 rebounds, one of two Maine players to reach a double-double. Lawrence Hill had 13 rebounds, leading all players in that realm, and added 17 points while Kenny Hayes and Courtney Pigram also scored in double digits with 12 and 10 points, respectively. Hayes leading all players in assists with 6.

The Springfield Armor also had two double-doubles on the night with Dennis Horner scoring 18 points with 12 rebounds while Jeff Foote had 17 points and 12 rebounds. The Armor's lead scorer, Jerry Smith had 22 points on the night while teammate Preston Knowles assisted with 11 of his own. L.D. Williams chipped in with 11 rebounds.

The two teams will meet again on Sunday at 5 PM in the final game of a two-game weekend set. The Red Claws will then head out for a weeklong road trip, swinging through Erie Tuesday, Fort Wayne Thursday and Canton Saturday before returning home on Sunday, March 11. The Armor will host Canton on Thursday and Iowa on Friday before heading out on their first extended road trip since a brutal seven game trip in late December.
