Maine Celtics News Release
PORTLAND, ME - The Maine Red Claws (13-8) closed out a six games in nine nights stretch and completed a two-game home-and-home sweep of the Springfield Armor (5-13) Saturday night at the Portland Expo Building, winning by a final score of 116-107. With the win and losses by both Erie and Canton tonight, the Red Claws move back into sole possession of first place in the closely-contested East Division.
The Red Claws and Armor traded hoops early in the first quarter, but Maine used a 10-0 run late to pull ahead 25-23 after the first frame. The squads remained mostly even throughout the second as well, until Shelvin Mack, in his third game back with the Red Claws after a stint with the Washington Wizards, took over, scoring 14 points in the quarter while dishing out six assists. Maine went on a 10-2 run to push their lead to five and seemed to be in control, but Springfield used an 8-0 run of their own to close out the half with the 59-56 advantage.
Maine reclaimed the lead and built a bit of a cushion in the third with a strong showing from the free throw line, as the Red Claws shot 12-14 from the charity stripe in the quarter. The Red Claws and Armor would keep trading points until late in the third, when Maine closed out with a 12-3 run that gave them an 83-76 lead heading into the final frame. In the fourth, Maine's lead was quickly erased by a 16-3 run to open, but the Red Claws answered with a 12-2 run of their own, keyed by Summers and Micah Downs.
Keying Springfield was Ben Uzoh, who scored 20 points and dished out five assists. Also contributing for the Armor were Christian Polk (16), Dennis Horner (16 points, eight rebounds), Carleton Scott (15), Willie Reed (12 points, eight rebounds) and Ramone Moore (12 points, six assists).
For the Red Claws, Summers led all scorers with 26, and added 11 rebounds for his seventh double-double of the season. Maine also got a double-double from Mack (20 points, 12 assists). Other key contributors for the Red Claws were Micah Downs (24 points, seven rebounds), Fab Melo (12 points, eight rebounds, six blocked shots) and Champ Oguchi (10).
The Red Claws will be back in action next Friday at 7 PM as they host a two-game weekend series against the Iowa Energy. Springfield will travel to Canton for a weekend tilt next Friday as well.
