
Red Claws Lose Heartbreaker

Portland, ME - The Maine Red Claws, presented by Unum, were short-handed and fought valiantly, but fell to the Long Island Nets in a battle at the Portland Expo, 112-103.
Maine (17-32) was led by Daniel Dixon with 29 points and 8 rebounds. Trey Davis followed up a 57 point performance with 28 points and 9 assists. Vitto Brown added 18 points off the bench, and Devin Williams added 12 points.
Long Island (27-22) was led by NBA assignee Isaiah Whitehead with 33 points. Milton Doyle added 20 points, while Jeremy Senglin scored 25 points off the bench.
Davis picked up right where he left off, by draining a long two to start the scoring. Both teams struggled to score early, with Dixon slashing to the hoop to make it a 6-2 game. The Red Claws extended their lead, with Josh Adeyeye burying a triple to make it 15-6 Claws. Jeremy Senglin capped off a strong 1st quarter with a three-ball; Senglin scored 11 in the 1st. The Red Claws led 28-23 after 1.
Brown continued his strong play to open the 2nd with another three. The Nets took the lead momentarily, but Dixon's slam put the Claws back up 33-32. Bennett went down halfway through the quarter with an ankle injury. The Nets came back after that. Whitehead hit a three to make it a 50-49 game. Senglin buried another three to tie the game, and followed that up with another one to give Long Island a 55-52 lead. The Nets led 59-54 at halftime. Davis led all scorers with 20 points at the break, while Senglin led the Nets with 17.
The Nets opened the 3rd quarter with 5 straight points to open a 10 point lead. Long Island went on an 11-4 run to start the half, with Davis stopping the blleding to cut it back to 72-62. Brown's slam got it back to 8. The Red Claws went on a 13-4 run to get it back to 74-71. The Red Claws cut it to 1 before Senglin slammed home a fast break dunk. The Nets led 84-79 after 3.
In the 4th, Davis' nifty drive and score made it a 1 point game. The Nets and Red Claws would exchange buckets, with Long Island maintaining a 4 point lead. Dixon's three-point play made it 91-89 in favor of Long Island. Williams scored on a hook shot, but Whitehead buried a deep three the other way. Dixon answered with a trey. Brown knocked in a corner three to make it 100-97. Whitehead's block led to a lay-up, putting Long Island up 6. Senglin's three point play put the game away for good.
Maine shot 42% (34-81) from the field, 32.4% (12-37) from three-point range and 23-30 from the free throw line. Long Island shot 44% (44-100) from the floor, 30.6% (11-36) from downtown and 13-19 from the charity stripe.
The Red Claws' season finale is Saturday at 2 pm at Raptors 905.
