State College Spikes News Release
STATE COLLEGE, PA - A near-capacity crowd of 5,504 fans filled Medlar Field at Lubrano Park on Thursday night, including the largest walk-up crowd in ballpark history, to see the State College Spikes rebound from a 10-1 loss to take a 10-2 win from the Oneonta Tigers and split a doubleheader.
A total 1,357 fans came to the Spikes Box Office on the day of the game for tickets to the doubleheader, the most in franchise history. The previous high was 1,237, set on Opening Day 2009. The total attendance was also the seventh largest in Medlar Field at Lubrano Park history, and marked the second time this season that over 5,500 fans were in attendance for a Spikes game, joining Opening Day in those ranks as well.
Pat Irvine paced the State College (28-26) offensive attack throughout both seven-inning games, going 4-for-5 with four RBI and reaching base six times on the night. Brock Holt, who was named to the National League All-Star squad for the New York-Penn League All-Star Game in State College earlier this week, went 3-for-6 over both games.
The Spikes came out of the gates with six runs in the first inning of game two, setting a season high for runs in an inning. Ricardo Paulino (1-3) earned his first win of the season with three innings in relief of Jason Erickson, who allowed just one run on four hits over four innings of work.
Oneonta (28-23) starter Cory Hamilton (3-4) was chased from the mound after just 1/3 of an inning in game two, taking the loss after allowing six runs, three earned, on four hits and a walk.
In game one, David Rubinstein provided the Spikes' only scoring with a solo home run to right-center field, his second homer of the year.
Luis Sanz (4-2) got the win for the Tigers in the first game with the first complete game in Medlar Field at Lubrano Park history. Nelson Pereira (3-4) took the loss for State College in game one after starting and allowing three runs on two hits and four walks over three innings.
Friday, the Spikes journey to Centennial Field to start a three-game series against the Vermont Lake Monsters with a 7:05 matchup. State College will send right-hander Kyle McPherson (2-3) to the mound to meet Vermont right-hander Matt Swynenberg (0-2).
While the Spikes are away, great seats are still available for the 2009 New York-Penn League All-Star Game, and tickets to the All-Star Mountain Bash on Monday, August 17 at the Tussey Mountain Ski Resort from 4-9 p.m. are available as well. For ticket information, visit the Medlar Field at Lubrano Park Box Office, call the Spikes toll-free at (877) 99-SPIKES, or log on to StateCollegeSpikes.com.
