Waterloo Black Hawks News Release

The Waterloo Black Hawks earned their 40th win of the season - a new franchise record - with five power play goals Friday during a 7-2 decision at Young Arena against the Des Moines Buccaneers.

The Hawks could not have drawn up a better start to the contest. Brandon Montour's shot was blocked 28 seconds after the opening faceoff, but the puck landed in front of Zach Sanford who spun and slipped a follow-up along the ice past goalie Ryan Ruck. It was the first shot on net during the game. Still less than five full minutes into the action, the Hawks converted again during their first power play. With Sanford setting a screen at the front of the net, Hayden Shaw's shot from the left point flew past the goaltender's glove side at 4:53.

Black Hawks special teams hit high gear in the second, generating four goals from six chances. Patrick Russell batted a loose puck into the net from just a couple of feet away at 1:17. During a two-man advantage at 7:50, Montour blasted a shot into the net. Ruck was called to the bench and replaced by Billy Christopoulos for the ensuing five-on-four time, but Waterloo struck again when the new Des Moines goalie successfully poke-checked Sanford, but put the puck on Tyler Sheehy's stick in the process. Sheehy scored from a sharp angle at 9:03. A second five-on three-goal was recorded at 14:09 on a point shot by Mark Friedman. The Buccaneers eventually answered on a power play goal of their own at 15:38, scored by Connor Schmidt from the left point.

Des Moines struck again 2:11 into the third when Marcel Godbout flipped a shot under the crossbar from close range. However, Jake Horton bagged the final goal of the game at 6:31, set up with an open side by John Wiitala.

Cameron Johnson made 22 saves for the victory.

Also Friday, the Omaha Lancers lost in a shootout, 3-2, against the Muskegon Lumberjacks, moving the Black Hawks to within one point of clinching the USHL Western Conference championship. The Indiana Ice topped the Dubuque Fighting Saints 5-4 Friday, so Waterloo remains two points behind Indiana for first place overall in the league.

There's more hockey at Young Arena Saturday. The Hawks stay on home ice to host the Sioux Falls Stampede at 7:05. The first 1,000 fans in attendance will receive a 2004 Clark Cup commemorative poster, courtesy of Karen's Print Rite. Tickets for the 7:05 contest are on sale from waterlooblackhawks.com or by calling the Domino's Black Hawks Box Office at (319) 291-7680.
