Indiana Ice News Release
The Indiana Ice inched closer to their first Anderson Cup Championship on Friday as the visitors squeaked out a 5-4 victory over the Dubuque Fighting Saints on the wings of a two-goal night by Sam Kurker.
Matt Roy, Joseph Sullivan and Dwyer Tschantz also potted goals in the contest while Aidan Muir and Mike Preston tallied a pair of assists each in the fray.
It was an unusual night in net for Indy goaltender Hayden Stewart as it was the first time the Rockford, IL-native set foot in his old home rink. He was equal to the challenge as the netminder recorded 27 saves on 31 shots to extend his consecutive win streak to 13 games with the victory over his former team.
Dubuque set the tone of the game quickly and with force as they outshot the Ice 9-0 in the first four minutes of the game, striking on a Blake Hillman shot for the 1-0 lead.
Indy responded with a little barrage of their own midway through the first, but quality beat quantity as three shots in a span of only 15 second wielded a pair of goals for the Ice.
The lamplighters came courtesy of Kurker with the help of Jason Salvaggio and Muir while Sullivan took a feed from Ryan Mantha to capture the 2-1 lead heading into the first intermission.
Matching markers in the second period resulted in Indy maintaining the one-goal advantage into the third period, but only 49 seconds elapsed in the final 20 minutes before the Saints were able to knot the contest.
Roy's third tally of the season lit another spark in the offense as Indy controlled the lead 4-3 just over two minutes into the third. Kurker capped a 90-second offensive onslaught with his second goal of the night to increase the margin to two goals at 5-3.
In favor of turning the tides, Dubuque pulled netminder Kevin Reich for the extra skater. The gambit had some effect as Alexx Privitera found the net, but the Saints weren't able to make lightning strike twice before the final buzzer.
Indy wraps up the season series with Dubuque Saturday night on the road before returning home for "College Night" on Wednesday, April 2 at Pan Am Pavilion, presented by Howl at the Moon.
The 2013-2014 regular season home campaign comes to a close on Friday, April 4 as the Ice host the Green Bay Gamblers on "Hockey for Heart" night, presented by St.Vincent Heart Center. The Bankers Life Fieldhouse contest is set to begin at 7:05 pm.
