Waterloo Black Hawks News Release
The Waterloo Black Hawks hockey team capped off a busy weekend with a victory over the Chicago Steel on Sunday evening. Waterloo went 1-2-0 on the weekend. The Hawks dropped a 5-2 decision in St. Louis on Friday night, and fell to Sioux City 2-1 Saturday night before a Young Arena record crowd of 3,552 fans.
Friday January 16, 2004- St. Louis 5 Waterloo 2
The Black Hawks and Heartland Eagles met for the second time this season Friday in Chesterfield, Missouri. St. Louis jumped out to a 2-0 lead and never looked back in a 5-2 win.
The Heartland Eagles used their special teams to take the early lead courtesy of a short-handed and power play goal to lead 2-0 after one. Waterloo got on the board mid-way through the second on a Jesse Vesel (Hibbing, MN) goal to cut the St. Louis lead in half. The Heartland Eagles responded with a pair of even strength goals a minute in a half apart to take the 4-1 lead after two.
Waterloo's Peter MacArthur (Clifton Park, NY) scored late in the third to bring Waterloo within two, but St. Louis added an empty net goal for the 5-2 win. Aaron Johnson (Hayward, WI) started in net and stopped 9-13 shots, before Kevin Regan (South Boston, MA) relieved him and stopped all five shots he faced.
Saturday January 17, 2004- Waterloo 2 Sioux City 1
Saturday the Black Hawks and Musketeers faced off for the fourth time this season in front of a Young Arena record crowd of 3,552 fans at Young Arena. The Playoff like atmosphere produced a high energy contest which Sioux City prevailed in 2-1.
Both teams skated a scoreless opening period. Sioux City got on the board in the second period on an Adam Krug even strength goal. Waterloo tied the contest on a Jake Schwan (Clifton Park, NY) short-handed tally. The game remained tied until 19 seconds left in the game when Dominic Maiani scored the decisive goal. Regan started in net and stopped 25-27 Musketeer shots.
Sunday January 18, 2004- Waterloo 5 Chicago 1
The Black Hawks capped off the busy weekend in a big way with a 5-1 victory over the first place Chicago Steel. Waterloo trailed 1-0 after one, but then exploded for four goals in the second period. Joel Hanson (Elk, River, MN) scored a short-handed goal one minute into the second to tie the game at one apiece. Peter MacArthur gave Waterloo their first lead with a power play goal at the 4:57 mark of the second. Dan Sturges (Verona, WI) stretched the lead to 3-1 with a rebound goal, off a scramble in front of the Chicago net. Tim Filangieri (N. Massapequa, NY) then scored his first goal as a Black Hawk with a drive from just inside the blue line to cap off the four goal period, which gave Waterloo a 4-1 lead after two. Garrett Regan (Hastings, MN) completed the Waterloo scoring with a power play goal in the third. Kevin Regan stopped 14-15 shots for the win in net.
Waterloo now faces a crucial week as they host the Danville Wings on Friday night at Young Arena in a 7:05 PM face-off before traveling to Green Bay on Saturday for a match up with the Gamblers at the Resch Center. Waterloo trails Danville by six points for third place in the Eastern Division, and leads Green Bay by four points for fourth place. The top four teams in the East and West will qualify for the USHL playoffs.
