Record-Breaking Crowd Cheers Fuel to Third Straight Win
January 14, 2017 - ECHL (ECHL)
Indy Fuel News Release
INDIANAPOLIS - The Indy Fuel's annual "Blackhawks Night" was a resounding success Saturday night at Indiana Farmers Coliseum where an all-time record crowd of 6,549 saw the hometown team top the Tulsa Oilers, 3-2.
Returning home following a 4-game road trip which was climaxed by two consecutive victories, the Fuel, for a second straight night, exploded for 3-early second period goals as they erased a e 1-0 deficit to gain their third victory in a row and their first in 3-clashes this season against the Tulsans.
With former Blackhawks star and Hall of Fame center Denis Savard the Fuel's special guest and legendary Blackhawks anthem singer and IU graduate Jim Cornelison belting out the National Anthem, the sellout crowd and the Fuel reached a fever pitch when Bryn Chyzyk torched the 3-goal torrent in 6:48 with a power play goal at the 1:07 mark of the middle frame. Josh Shalla's 18th goal of the campaign, 1:13 later broke the tie, creating an Indy lead it did not relinquish at 2-1. Transplanted right wing Chris Williams, the Fuel's most penalized player, delivered the GWG at 7:55 to culminate the crescendo as the Fuel seized an insurmountable 3-1 advantage at the second intermission.
Goalkeeper Jake Hildebrand and company took it the rest of the way, though the Oilers made matters uncomfortable for the victors late in the third period on a Darcy Murphy strike with 6:13 remaining in regulation time.
Tulsa outshot the Fuel, 36-28 as 9 of Indy's 12-wins thus far this season have come when they are outshot by the opposition. Shalla earned the game's #1 Star, being instrumental on all 3-goals with 1-goal and 2-assists.
The Fuel's 3-consecutive victories have come against Central Division competition where before the win streak, they had managed a record of 9(1-6-2) within their own division.
Indy caps a rigorous regimen of 4-games in 6-days Sunday in a 5:00 pm face-off at Fort Wayne where the state of Indiana rivalry is renewed for another time. The broadcast is set for CBS Sports 1430, beginning at 4:40 pm.
Next Home Game: Friday, January 20 vs. Toledo Walleye - 7:35 p.m. Be on hand as the Fuel make perhaps the biggest announcement for Indianapolis hockey since the Fuel's inaugural season. Friday is also a Fuel College Night presented by Moe's Southwest Grill - pick up a ticket, $5 towards concessions and $5 Moe's Bucks for $20 with a valid college ID.
