PENSACOLA, Fla. - The Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp (23-35) fell to the Pensacola Blue Wahoos (34-24) by a 7-5 score in the third game of the five-game series at Blue Wahoos Stadium on Tuesday night.
Pensacola right-handed relief pitcher Tom Hackimer (2-1) earned the win with an inning and two-thirds of scoreless relief work, walking one batter and striking out two. Jacksonville left-handed relief pitcher McKenzie Mills (1-7) took the loss, allowing two runs (one earned) on three hits with two walks and two strikeouts in his inning and a third of work. Pensacola left-handed relief pitcher Sam Clay earned his fourth save by recording the final out for the Blue Wahoos.
After a scoreless first inning, the Wahoos grabbed the lead in the bottom of the second with a two-out, two-RBI single by Jimmy Kerrigan to build a 2-0 lead. Jacksonville's Brian Miller led off the top of the fourth inning with a double, extending his hitting streak to a Double-A best 16 games in a row. He was brought home by Stone Garrett's RBI single to get Jacksonville on the board, cutting Pensacola's lead to 2-1. Pensacola tacked on a run in the bottom of the fifth, with Caleb Hamilton bringing in a run when he grounded into a force out to put the score at 3-1.
Jacksonville immediately responded in the top of the sixth inning with a two-RBI single by Garrett to tie the game 3-3. The even score was short-lived, as the Wahoos scored twice against Mills in the bottom of the sixth to regain the lead 5-3. Pensacola added extra insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth off Jacksonville right-handed reliever Kolton Mahoney. Jaylin Davis and Ryan Costello delivered back-to-back RBI singles in that frame to grow the lead to 7-3.
The Jumbo Shrimp for the third straight game rallied for runs in the ninth against the Wahoos bullpen. Miller and Garrett both delivered RBI singles to cut the Wahoos lead to 7-5. Clay came in to face Billy Fleming with two outs and struck him out looking to preserve Pensacola's second straight win in the series.
Jacksonville right-handed starting pitcher Robert Dugger had his first no decision of the season. Dugger left with the game tied at three, and he pitched five innings where allowed three runs (one earned) on five hits with two walks and six strikeouts.
