KENT, Wash. - Keegan Kolesar scored twice and added an assist to help the Seattle Thunderbirds get past the Everett Silvertips, 4-1 to advance onto the Western Conference Final in game 4 before 5,438 fans at ShoWare Center on Friday.
The Silvertips magical season, highlighted by their fifth U.S. Division title in 14 seasons of play, came to a close after they advanced to the second round and WHL's "elite eight" for the third straight season. Dominic Zwerger, ending his WHL career as a trio of 20-year olds on the roster, scored the final Tips goal of the season.
The first three games of the series were decided by one goal, with games 1 and 3 decided in either the final minute of regulation or overtime.
Next season, the 15th in Snohomish County, will open up in September with season tickets and ticket packages available by securing with a $50 deposit now through www.everettsilvertips.com/tickets. Guests will include Silvertips assistant coach Mitch Love, and more to be announced.
The Silvertips started strong by outshooting Seattle, 5-2 in the first ten minutes but fell behind 1-0 on Donovan Neuls' breakaway goal, shorthanded at 14:03. Keegan Kolesar then built the lead to 2-0 at 16:47 when he deflected Turner Ottenbreit's point shot for his fifth of the playoffs.
Mathew Barzal's fourth goal of the series put the Tips in a 3-0 hole at 6:24 of the second period when a rebound found his tape, for a sharp angled shot from the left circle.
Zwerger finally got the Tips on the board at 10:05 of the second period when he outmuscled the Seattle defense and finished a shorthanded breakaway on a backhander, his fourth of the playoffs. But Kolesar buried a wrister from the right circle at 12:51 of the second period, and the Silvertips were unable to recover.
Goaltender Carl Stankowski picked up the win with 24 saves.
