Everett Silvertips News Release

EVERETT, Wash. - Matt Fonteyne tied a franchise game record with five assists and the Everett Silvertips used a late power play goal by Garrett Pilon to pull away for a 6-5 victory over the Tri-City Americans before 3,214 fans in downtown Everett on Monday in WHL action.

The Silvertips, sweeping through three games in three days, returned to sole possession of first place in the U.S. Division and posted a combined seven points between Pilon and linemates Riley Sutter and Connor Dewar (re-united in the middle of the game). The Silvertips improved to 5-1-1-0 in the season series over Tri-City.

UP NEXT: The Tips take on the Tri-City Americans on Monday to wrap up a three-in-three at 4:05 p.m. (1380 AM / FM 95.3 / Tips App / WHL Live) at Angel of the Winds Arena.

Connor Dewar's backhander at 11:33 of the first period followed by Sean Richards' tap in at 15:47 put the Tips ahead 2-0 after one period, erased by two goals from Tri-City's Jordan Topping - a re-direction at the right post just 20 seconds in - and Nolan Yaremko's tap-in at 2:21.

Dewar's second goal of the game - a snap shot from the left circle set up by Fonteyne and Pilon - restored the Tips lead at 10:55 but Yaremko answered on a backdoor finish from Isaac Johnson just 56 seconds later to tie the game, 3-3.

Tri-City kept the Tips red-hot power play at bay by not committing a single penalty until late in the second period, when the Tips burned them for a 4-3 lead. Patrick Bajkov stashed a rebound from the right circle at 13:23, set up by Matt Fonteyne's wrister from the left circle for a 4-3 edge.

Johnson unleashed a snap shot at 16:16 of the second period to tie the game at 4-4, and the teams exchanged high grade scoring chances into the third period. On the Tips second power play, Fonteyne snuck a saucer pass from the right circle across to Pilon, burying a one-timer at 16:43 of the third period to lift the Tips over Tri-City, 6-5.

Riley Sutter successfully tracked Matt Fonteyne's clearing attempt on a 6-on-5 and tucked an empty netter from the right circle with 50 seconds to play, putting the Tips up 6-4. But penalty issues out of a scrum on the next shift gave Tri-City a two man advantage and they pulled goaltender Beck Warm for a 6-on-3 situation. Dylan Coughlan's blast from the top sailed wide, but a sharp carom off the backboards deflected into the net off Dustin Wolf with 15 seconds to play, leaving the score at 6-5.

Tri-City earned one more opportunity but Coughlan's missile from the right point sailed wide, and the rolling puck found the Americans zone as time expired.

The Silvertips went 3-0-1-0 at home this season against Tri-City.

Notes: Silvertips scratches included Gianni Fairbrother (injury, week to week), Akash Bains (injury, week-to-week), Jameson Murray (healthy), Luke Ormsby (healthy) and Bronson Sharp (healthy) ... the Tips went are 12-of-26 in their most recent stretch on the power play ... Bajkov's goal tied for second, all-time in Silvertips history with Joshua Winquist.
