GAME RECAP): Everett 4 - Victoria 2
VICTORIA, British Columbia - Matt Fonteyne scored twice, Dominic Zwerger and Patrick Bajkov each collected two assists and goaltender Carter Hart made 25 saves to help lift the Everett Silvertips back into first place in the U.S. Division, in a 4-2 victory over the Victoria Royals before a sellout crowd of 7,006 at Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre in WHL action on Friday.
The Tips seized a one point lead for top spot in the U.S. Division with two games to play, next facing the Victoria Royals in the finale of a home and home series and in Fan Appreciation Night at XFINITY Arena on Saturday, 7:05 p.m. (1380 AM / FM 95.3 / Tips App). Tickets are available at www.everettsilveritps.com/ticketpromos.
Both teams came out fast and hard to start the first. At 3:19, Lucas Skrumeda got called for interference, giving the Royals their first power play of the game. The penalty kill looked extremely sharp and Carter Hart made big saves to kill it off and bring the Tips back to full strength. Shortly after the penalty expired, Eetu Tuulola took a hooking penalty at 5:33.
Victoria got the scoring started as Jack Walker got on the board with the power play goal at 5:56 making the score 1-0 Royals. At 7:19, Jeremy Marsella took an interference penalty giving the Tips their first power play of the game. The top power play unit got the equalizer, making the score 1-1, as Dominic Zwerger and Patrick Bajkov set up Kevin Davis with the power play goal at 8:24. The line of 96-17-8 continued to make magic happen as Dominic Zwerger and Patrick Bajkov set up Matt Fonteyne with a beautiful roofed shot over Outhouse to make the score 2-1 at 11:44.
The teams exchange penalties as Mitchell Prowse gets called for the hold and Brian King gets called for embellishment at 15:48 for 4-on-4 hockey. Neither team are able to capitalize and go back to full strength after two minutes. Period ends with the Tips leading 2-1 and shots 9-7 Tips.
Victoria got the equalizer rather quickly as Jack Walker scored his second of the night 22 seconds into the second period to make it 2-2. Everett responded extremely well to the goal as Eetu Tuulola scored a gorgeous birthday goal, making the score 3-2, thanks to a helper by Wyatte Wylie at 1:32.
Less than two minutes later, Matt Fonteyne gets his second of the night at 3:59 to make the score 4-2, set up by Noah Juulsen and Lucas Skrumeda. Juulsen cradled Skrumeda's pass while regrouping back in the Silvertips zone, then sailed a 140-foot laser to Fonteyne for the breakaway and forehand deke.
The second period saw a fair amount of breakaway opportunities by the Royals, but Carter Hart did an excellent job of keeping the puck out of the net.
At the 12 minute mark, Wylie took a delay of game penalty as he launched the puck over the net and the Royals were on the power play again. Everett looked sharp on the penalty kill and Victoria was unable to score. At 18:29, Aaron Irving and Vladimir Bobylev dropped the gloves and each got five minutes for fighting; Bobylev got an additional two minute penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct, giving the Tips the power play.
The Tips began the third on the man advantage for 29 seconds but unfortunately were unable to capitalize and Victoria returned to full strength. The third period was the Carter Hart Show as he made big saves to keep the score at 4-2. On the other end, Griffen Outhouse also looked sharp.
At 8:27, Patrick Bajkov and Blake Bargar exchanged roughing penalties, which gave the teams two minutes of 4-on-4 hockey. Victoria appeared dangerous on 4-on-4 situations because of their speed but the Tips did well at keeping them from quality scoring chances.
At 16:22, Royals and Tips exchanged penalties once again with Patrick Bajkov and Ryan Gagnon going to their prospective boxes for slashing, giving another two minutes of 4-on-4. Neither team scored during the two minutes and the Royals took a timeout with less than two to go in the game.
The Royals pulled Outhouse for the sixth attacker and did not end up getting a lot of chances and ended the game defending their own net as the Tips attempted to get an empty net several times as the buzzer expired.
Carter Hart's counterpart, Griffen Outhouse, made 18 saves.
