Kelowna Rockets News Release
The Kelowna Rockets defeated the Vancouver Giants 7-0 on Friday night in Kelowna's last home game of the regular season.
Reid Gardiner started the scoring 52 seconds into the opening period tapping home his 17th on a tic-tac-toe passing play from Nick Merkley and Calvin Thurkauf. Nolan Foote notched his 18th of the season on the power play and Kelowna took a 2-0 lead into the break.
Rodney Southam kept the Rockets momentum going as he scored his 18th of the campaign at 5:59. Then at 6:12 Kyle Topping gave Kelowna a large four goal cushion. There would be no more scoring in the second period.
Southam collected his second of the night at 8:20 of the final stanza. James Hilsendager took a point shot that found its way to the back of the net as he got his sixth of the year. Kole Lind made it 7-0 late in the game with his 29th and that's how the scoring came to a close. 7-0 Rockets final.
Nolan Foote contributed a Gordie Howe Hat-Trick after scoring a goal, collecting an assist, and taking part in his first WHL fight. Kole Lind had a goal and three assists in the Rockets victory.
Michael Herringer advances to 32-15-3-0 on the year stopping all 21 shots he faced for the shutout. The Rockets outshot Vancouver 38-21.
Kelowna improves to 44-22-5-0 on the season and remain 2 points behind Prince George.
The Rockets close out the 2016-2017 regular season with a rematch with the Giants tomorrow night, this time in Langley. That game is Kelowna's 72nd and final game before heading into playoffs.
Kelowna will be back home in the post season starting on Friday night at Prospera Place, their opponent is yet to be determined.
