NOT-SO-SCARY 13!
The Red Deer Rebels have a set a new modern Western Hockey League (1978-current) record by winning their 13th consecutive game to start the 2022-23 season. The Rebels established the new mark with a 7-2 win over the Edmonton Oil Kings at Rogers Place on Sunday.
The previous modern WHL record for wins to start a regular season belonged to the Swift Current Broncos, who won their first 12 contests to begin the 1988-89 campaign. The all-time WCHL/WHL record for wins to begin a season belongs to the 1967-68 Estevan Bruins squad that won their first 22 games out of the gate.
Red Deer now has a chance to equal its franchise record winning streak of 14 games, set during the 2001-02 season, when they visit the Swift Current Broncos this Friday, November 4.
3-0 WEEK!
Sun. Oct 30 - The Rebels defeated the Edmonton Oil Kings for a third straight time by a final score of 7-2. The game was tied 2-2 after one period before the Rebels exploded for five goals in the second period. Kai Uchacz had a goal and two assists. Escalus Burlock scored his first WHL goal in his hometown rink.
Fri. Oct. 28 - Talon Brigley had a career high three points (1 goal, 2 assists) to lead the Rebels to a 4-0 win over the visiting Vancouver Giants at the Peavey Mart Centrium. Rhett Stoesser made 15 saves for his second shutout in his last three starts.
Wed. Oct. 26 - The Rebels skated to a 6-2 win over the visiting Victoria Royals at the Peavey Mart Centrium. Kai Uchacz scored twice. Carson Birnie scored his first WHL goal for the Rebels while Dwayne Jean Jr. scored his first goal with the club. Matteo Fabrizi and Jace Isley also scored.
RODEO ROAD TRIP
The Rebels have started a stretch of nine-straight games away from home as the Canadian Finals Rodeo and AgriTrade take over the Peavey Mart Centrium. The team will be out east for the next six games starting Friday at Swift Current then Saturday at Moose Jaw. Red Deer is 5-0-0-0 on the road so far this season.
WHO'S HOT?
- Goaltender Rhett Stoesser leads the WHL with two shutouts and has the league's best goals against average (1.40). He also has the WHL's fifth best save percentage at .934.
- Goaltender Kyle Kelsey is second in the WHL in wins (8), tied for second in shutouts (1), is fourth in save percentage (.936) and is fourth in the league with a 1.87 goals against average
- Centre Jayden Grubbe leads all Rebels with 15 points this season (4 goals, 11 assists)
- Centre Kai Uchacz has six points in his last four games (4 goals, 2 assists). He is second in the WHL with 11 goals and tied for second with four game winning goals. Uchacz has scored in three-straight games.
- Forward Jhett Larson has points in five-straight games (2 goals, 3 assists)
- Forward Kalan Lind has three assists in his last two games
- Defenceman Christoffer Sedoff is tied for third in defence scoring with 13 points
- Defenceman Hunter Mayo is tied for third in the WHL with four power play goals
- Uchacz and Sedoff are tied for the league lead with plus/minus ratings of +13
- Forward Talon Brigley has four points (1 goal, 3 assists) in his last two games
- The Rebels are the league's top overall team when it comes to special teams, sitting fourth in the WHL on the power play (28.6%) and second in penalty killing (91.1%)
