Winterhawks Weekly: Hawks Hit Busy Week with Points in Two Straight

October 31, 2022 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Portland Winterhawks News Release

The Winterhawks picked up three of four possible points in a back-to-back set with the Kelowna Rockets last week, setting the stage for a busy four-game week which includes the first two fixtures in this year's edition of the I-5 Rivalry between Portland and Seattle.

Hot Hawks:

Forward James Stefan scored in each game and chipped in one assist last weekend while recording his 100th WHL point, boosting his totals to four goals and six helpers in eight games. Stefan has recorded at least one point in seven of eight contests this season.

Forward Dawson Pasternak chipped in assists on Friday and Saturday and has now recorded points in four of his last six outings (1G, 4A in that span).

Forward Gabe Klassen tallied an assist on Friday and scored his team-leading ninth goal on Saturday for his 100th WHL point. The Hawks' captain has found the scoresheet in each of his six games played so far this season.

Defenseman Carter Sotheran grabbed his first WHL goal on Saturday as he wired home the game-winner late in the third period against Kelowna. Fresh off being named to NHL Central Scouting's initial watch list for the 2023 NHL Draft, he also added an assist to mark the second multi-point game of his young WHL career.

Goaltender Jan Špunar picked up the win on Sunday to move to 3-0-0-0 on the season. The Czech netminder has stopped 71 of 80 shots faced in four appearances for Portland this season.

Play of the Week:

Carter Sotheran saw his opportunity and took it in style on Saturday, displaying some dazzling individual skill to pot the game-winning tally for his first goal in the WHL. After picking up a loose puck in the neutral zone, Sotheran slips past one Kelowna defender and backs up the others as he enters the offensive zone before unleashing a laser past Jari Kykkanen for the lead.

Weekly Rewind:

Portland 3 vs Kelowna 4 OT (Friday):

The Winterhawks twice held a two-goal lead in the third period, but Andrew Cristall's two tallies - including the OT winner - led the visiting Rockets to a 4-3 win in the extra frame.
