Real Salt Lake News Release
SANDY, Utah - Real Salt Lake welcomed German Bundesliga club Eintracht Frankfurt to Rio Tinto Stadium for an international friendly match on Tuesday, playing to a 1-1 draw with the defending DFB-Pokal champions. Head Coach Mike Petke's squad featured nine starters from RSL's first team and two Real Monarchs SLC members.
RSL took the lead after just 10 minutes when FW Joao Plata found an onrushing FW Andrew Brody inside the box and he slammed the ball home near the penalty spot for the go-ahead goal. RSL would continue to press in the attacking third throughout the half but was unable to double its advantage.
At the interval, Eintracht made wholesale changes to its lineup, replacing 10 of its original 11 starters with only goalkeeper Felix Wiedwald remaining on the field. The start of the second half saw a physical affair ensue as RSL frustrated Eintracht's back line went in an attempt to find its second goal. Eintracht leveled the match in second-half stoppage time when Nicolai Müller headed home a corner kick past GK Andrew Putna, finalizing the 1-1 scoreline in the international friendly. RSL has now hosted top-tier professional clubs in each of its last three seasons with teams now able to train at the newly minted Zions Bank Real Academy in Herriman.
UP NEXT: Real Salt Lake returns to MLS action on Saturday when it visits Minnesota United with kick off set for 6:00 p.m. MT from TCF Bank Stadium. Additionally, Real Monarchs SLC returns to action Saturday as well, taking on Seattle Sounders FC 2 at Zions Bank Stadium with kick off set for 8:00 p.m. MT.
GOAL SCORING SUMMARY:
RSL: Andrew Brody (Joao Plata), 10th minute: A wonderful run into the box near the end line from Plata opened up space near the penalty spot for Brody to run into. Plata played a perfectly placed ball into the path of an onrushing Brody who slammed home the opening goal.
EF: Nicolai Müller (Danny Blum), 93rd minute+: After earning a corner kick late in the match, Blum swung in a driven ball to the back post where Müller broke free from his man to slam a headed effort home for the equalizer.
NOTES:
- RSL continued its tradition of hosting some of the world's top clubs at Rio Tinto Stadium having hosted Inter Milan (2016), Manchester United (2017) and now Eintracht Frankfurt the past three years. This is the first year the $78-million Zions Bank Real Academy has been available as Frankfurt used the facility to train prior to the match against RSL and will remain in Utah until Thursday preparing for its next friendly against the Philadelphia Union.
- Two of RSL's Starting XI - Andrew Putna and Andrew Brody - are currently signed for USL's Real Monarchs. Four other Monarchs were available for selection coming off the bench as all four saw playing time in the match.
- Defender Shawn Barry saw his first minutes in an RSL uniform since the club's 2018 home opener against LAFC, going 31 minutes in the friendly.
