Real Monarchs News Release

SANDY, Utah (Friday, July 10, 2015) - The USL Real Monarchs host its final July home match Saturday night against the Austin Aztex, with a 7:00 p.m. MT kickoff at Rio Tinto Stadium. An expected Monarchs record crowd of Utah soccer fans welcome the Aztex and its Technical Director / Head Coach Paul Dalglish , a former Real Salt Lake assistant coach. Saturday's game will also be broadcast on a tape-delayed basis following RSL on KMYU - continuing its broadcast of all Monarchs home matches in 2015 - as well as RealMonarchs.com or the Real Monarchs YouTube page. You can find the TV broadcast schedule here.

Real Monarchs (1-9-6, 9 points, 12th West) are coming off a 10-day break after playing 3 matches in 7 days that concluded in a 1-1 draw with Sacramento Republic FC on July 1st during a historic doubleheader with Real Salt Lake. In that duel, Monarchs continued its undefeated streak against the defending USL champions, fighting back to earn a point at home. In the 18th minute, SLC native Justin Braun poked home a loose ball after a Republic FC corner was not cleared properly. Monarchs head coach Freddy Juarez stating that "the first half we had players that didn't show up - that didn't put enough into the game." One of the substitutes was FW Eti Tavares who scored his second goal of the season when MF Ricardo Velazco looked up and drew two defenders to him. Rather than take the shot he scooped the ball up and over the back line to Tavares who bent it around Republic GK Patrick McLain for the game-tying goal. Leading goal scorer FW Max Rauhofer had the chance to put Real up and earn all three points when he took a penalty kick in the 83rd minute but blasted it squarely off the crossbar.

Austin Aztex (5-8-3, 18 points, 10th West) last win came on June 6th over Sacramento, a 1-0 win. Since that victory, Austin has posted a 0-2-2 record that includes a 0-2 loss in its last match to Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC. In that contest, Aztex only took six shots to Switchback's fifteen, five of which were on goal. Aztex did well to hold a clean sheet in the first 45 minutes but Switchbacks finally broke through in the 54th minute with Miguel Gonzalez goal. Gonzalez would add to his tally in the 80th minute solidifying the win for his side.

Monarchs History v. Austin Aztex

Monarchs have played Austin Aztex just one time prior to Saturday's match up. On May 9, Monarchs flew to Austin and took a 2-1 lead in the 57th minute, when captain Lucas Baldin scored from a free kick. Juarez' side was unable to close out the match and Austin scored two late goals to earn a dramatic, come back win.

The Capital City Cup Continues

The Capital City Cup is a team supporter's group challenge where the capital city based USL teams compete. This year the competition is for the Western Conference Capital City teams only including: Sacramento, Phoenix, Austin, Oklahoma, and Salt Lake City. The team with the best record between these 5 teams wins the fan-created Cup. Currently Real Monarchs sits just below Austin Aztex in the table with Austin earning 7 points in 8 games and Monarchs earning 5 points in 5 games. You can check out the entire Capital Cup schedule here.

Real Monarchs Playoff Contention

With the club sitting 13 points below playoff contention, the final 12 matches of the season will be critical if a postseason berth is a possibility. The top 6 teams in the West will earn a playoff spot and right now those teams average 1.73 points per game. Real Monarchs will need to earn at least 2.5 points per game for its final 12 matches of the season to make it to the 5th or 6th place play-in spot coming the end of September.
