Real Monarchs News Release
PORTLAND, Ore. - Real Monarchs SLC (3-6-3, 12 points) dropped a 2-1 result to Portland Timbers 2 at Providence Park on Saturday, seeing its winless skid continue.
FW Douglas Martinez rifled a shot to put the Monarchs up early, but a second half response from Timbers 2 took the three points at the end of the night.
The contest opened with some strong back and forth play in the middle of the park as each side volleyed for control over one another. DF Konrad Plewa nearly found an early opening goal as he dove to connect a corner kick with a header, but just missed the mark. Timbers 2 had a chance of its own as a heavy touch got around GK Alex Horwath leaving an open net, but Plewa shut out the chance. Martinez struck first for the Monarchs however, as Kacher set him up for a quick one-touch shot that found the top corner of the far post to end the half ahead with one goal.
Portland Timbers 2 started off the second half strong putting pressure down around the Monarchs defensive third, which the Monarchs limited before Timbers 2 were able to find the equalizer in the 63rd minute. Moments later, Portland tallied its second goal after Modou Jadama curled a freekick over the wall into the top-left corner of the net. The Monarchs stole momentum back in its favor in the final moments of the match, but ultimately could not find the equalizing goal as the match ended 2-1.
UP NEXT: Real Monarchs SLC is set to return home to host Rio Grande Valley FC at Zions Bank Stadium for Pups at the Pitch night. The match is set for Saturday, June 8th at Zions Bank Stadium where kickoff is set for 8:00 p.m. MT.
GOAL SCORING RUNDOWN
SLC: Douglas Martinez (Masta Kacher), 37th minute - In an attacking play that started with a throw in Portland's defensive half, Masta Kacher took the ball into the penalty area and created space for Martinez to run into. Kacher sent the pass to Martinez who took a quick one-touch shot that found the top corner pocket on the far post.
POR: Dairon Asprilla, 63rd minute - Portland Timbers 2 picked up the equalizer as a cross to the far post met the foot of Marvin LorÃa. Monarchs goalkeeper Alex Horwath made the run to shut it out but LorÃa's shot went past him and bounced off the post into the middle of the area. Asprilla took the opportunity to clean up in front of the open net and leveled the scoring.
POR: Modou Jadama, 70th minute - Just moments after leveling out the scoring, Portland Timbers earns a freekick just outside the 18-yard-line. Jadama took the freekick and sent it curling into the top of left corner over the wall and into the top left corner of the net.
KEY SAVES AND DEFENSIVE STOPS
SLC: Konrad Plewa, 13h minute: In the strong opportunity for Portland Timbers 2, a heavy touch found its way past Alex Horwath, leaving the ball open in front of a wide net. Before the Portland offense could get a touch to it however, Plewa cut out the attack and made the clearance to keep it level in the early minutes.
SLC: Alex Horwath, 89th minute: A quick ball forward connected with the foot of Timbers 2 forward Brayan Hurtado who rifled a shot towards goal that Horwath made a massive dive to deflect out of the way to keep the game alive.
