Sacramento Republic FC News Release
SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Sacramento Republic FC will take on the San Jose Earthquakes in the Fourth Round of the 2019 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, U.S. Soccer announced today. The Major League Soccer side will host Republic FC at Avaya Stadium on Tuesday, June 11, with kickoff scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Tickets will be available via Tickemaster.com beginning Wednesday, June 5, at 10 a.m.
Republic FC booked their place in the Fourth Round of the tournament by defeating Fresno FC 1-0 after extra time on Wednesday night. Stefano Bonomo headed home a last-gasp goal in the 123rd minute to ensure Republic FC advanced to the Fourth Round for a fifth time in six seasons.
Sacramento and San Jose have met twice prior in U.S. Open Cup play. After earning a 2-1 victory at Kezar Stadium in 2014, the Quakes then erased a two-goal deficit to tie the game and later win on penalty kicks in 2015. Both matches, like the upcoming showdown on June 11, were in the Fourth Round of the competition.
Founded in 1914, the U.S. Open Cup is the longest-running national cup competition in U.S. sports and the third-longest-running open soccer tournament in the world. The competition, which featured 84 teams this year, is open to professional and amateur teams affiliated with U.S. Soccer. Last year, Republic FC made its furthest run in the U.S. Open Cup, defeating Major League Soccer's Seattle Sounders FC en route to the Round of 16 where they nearly upset LAFC in a 3-2 loss at Banc of California Stadium.
