Republic FC Advance to Fourth Round of 2019 U.S. Open Cup with 1-0 Win over Fresno FC
May 30, 2019 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Sacramento Republic FC News Release
SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Stefano Bonomo scored in the final minute of extra time to lift Republic FC past Fresno FC and into the Fourth Round of the 2019 U.S. Open Cup.
Much like their first encounter this season, Republic FC and Fresno FC saw out an evenly matched affair on Wednesday night that would take full time, plus all 30 minutes of extra time, to define the winner.
Sacramento thought they had initially broken the deadlock in the 66th minute when Sam Werner dribbled through a pair of defenders before firing off an effort from the edge of the box that struck the woodwork and bounced down past the goal line before going back out to play. The goal was not called, however, and the match would remain scoreless through 90 minutes and go into extra time.
Just as it seemed the match would go to penalty kicks, Werner redirected a cross back into the box that Bonomo headed home to lift Republic FC into the Fourth Round of the U.S. Open Cup. The goal, scored with seconds remaining on the clock, was Bonomo's first of the season and ensures Republic FC will face off against a Major League Soccer team in the Fourth Round of the tournament for a third consecutive year.
Sacramento will learn their next opponent and the host of their Fourth Round matchup this Thursday morning. The game will be played on June 11 or June 12.
