HERRIMAN, Utah - Real Monarchs (5-18-7, 22 points) played to a 1-1 draw against Mountain Division opponent Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC at Zions Bank Stadium.
Kyle Adams' first goal as a member of the Real Monarchs was enough for a hard-earned point at home.
The match's first action began with a foul at midfield in the 13th minute that led to midfielder Julio Benitez receiving a red card, leaving the Monarchs with 10 men the rest of the way. Colorado Springs saw its first good chance of the match in the 27th minute with a cross into the far post, but the shot missed wide. The Monarchs best chance of the half came in the 34th minute, but Max Mata's left-footed shot from the top of the box was saved by the goalkeeper. In the 7th minute of added time a foul in the box led to Switchbacks FC being awarded a penalty, but goalkeeper Jeff Dewsnup denied Hadji Barry's attempt with a dive to his right and the sides entered the break scoreless.
The Monarchs found the breakthrough in the 47th minute after Milan Iloski was awarded a free kick near the right side of the box. Iloski fired a cross towards Adams at the far post and the Monarchs defender tucked the ball into the back of the net to give the home side the 1-0 lead. Despite a hard-fought second half by the Monarchs, Colorado Springs stole a point with an equalizer in the 95th minute when Andre Lewis headed the ball over Dewsnup and into the back of the net to bring the score to 1-1 in the dying moments of the match.
UP NEXT: Real Monarchs welcome Rio Grande Valley FC for the final home match of the 2021 USL Championship regular season at Zions Bank Stadium on Wednesday, October 27 at 7:00 p.m. MT. The match can be streamed on ESPN+ and the KSL TV app.
