Reading overpowered by New Britain

The Reading Fightin Phils (33-37) and New Britain Rock Cats (37-332) went back and forth on Friday night but it would be the Rock Cats that came out on top as they won 10-8. The Fightin Phils tied the game once after falling behind 5-0 to begin the game. Nefi Ogando (2-1) earned his first loss of the season.

Brandon Waring led off the bottom of the 2nd inning with a solo home run off Hoby Milner to give the Rock Cats a 1-0 lead. The home run for Waring was his sixth on the season and the thirteenth home run given up by Milner.

A throwing error by Edgar Duran to begin the bottom of the 3rd inning allowed Aaron Hicks to reach second base. Eddie Rosario hit a RBI single to score Hicks and give the Rock Cats a 2-0 lead. New Britain chased Hoby Milner out of the game in the bottom of the 3rd inning as they scored three runs to take a 5-0 lead. The Rock Cats scored via a sacrifice fly from Reynaldo Rodriguez and a two-run triple from Tony Thomas.

With two outs in the top of the 6th inning the Fightin Phils scored four runs off starter Taylor Rogers to get within one run of the Rock Cats, 5-4. After an error by Eddie Rosario, Anthony Phillips hit a bases-clearing double to put the Fightins on the board. Logan Moore capped off the inning with a RBI single to score Phillips. All runs were unearned for Rogers.

New Britain added another run in the bottom of the 6th inning as Nate Hanson hit a RBI single off Ryan O'Sullivan to give New Britain a 6-4 lead. Reading tied the game at 6-6 in the top of the 7th inning as Aaron Altherr and Jake Fox hit back-to-back doubles. Taylor Rogers left the game after 6 2/3 innings and handed things over to reliever Dan Turpen.

The Rock Cats exploded for four runs off Nefi Ogando in the bottom of the 7th inning to take a 10-6 lead. Reynaldo Rodriguez hit a solo home run to begin the inning. Mike Kvasnicka followed with a two-run home run and Eddie Rosario hit a RBI double.

Reading tried to comeback in the top of the 9th inning off reliever Matt Summers. Aaron Altherr hit a RBI groundout and Jake Fox hit a RBI single to put the Fightins within two runs, 10-8.

Kyle Simon pitched 1 2/3 scoreless innings with two strikeouts.

Aaron Altherr extended his hitting streak to 13 games with a single in the top of the 4th inning off Rogers.
